William R. "Bill" Black

William “Bill” Roy Black, 90, of Grace City, ND, peacefully passed away on May 14, 2017, at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND.

William Roy was born October 12, 1926, in Larrabee Township, Foster County, on a farm near Brantford, ND, to G.C. (Grover Cleveland) and Estella Benetta (Peterson) Black. He attended school at Grace City for his elementary school years, and at Juanita, ND, for his high school years, where he graduated in 1944.

On New Year’s Eve, 1944, he met Leona Tonn, and they married October 19, 1947, at her parent’s home in New Rockford.  They lived, farmed, and retired on the Prairie Rose Farm near Juanita until May 2014, when they moved into Carrington, ND.

William was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Grace City. He served on the Board of Directors for the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, and he was also a member of the Central North Dakota Steam Threshers. His interests included history, music (playing the organ), restoring old tractors and collecting antiques.

He is survived by his wife, Leona; daughters, Rebecca (David) Utke, Glenfield, ND; Barbara Venarchick, Casa Grande, AZ; Donetta Black, Hobbs, NM; and son, Kevin (Judy) Black, Glenfield, ND; six grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Leon; his parents; brothers, Paul (Borghild) and Norvin (Phyllis); sisters, Alice (Lloyd Olson) and Esther (Benton Buell); and son-and law, Robert Venarchick.

Bill’s family suggests memorial contributions be made his name to
