Charles "Chuck" March

It is with profound sorrow but faith in God’s promises that the family of Chuck March informs all friends and family of his passing into eternal life. Chuck passed comfortably Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at the age of 92, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Charles Ellsworth March was born at Cathay, ND, on March 23, 1925, to Charlie and Maude (Goldsmith) March. He grew up in that community, graduating from Cathay Public School in 1943. As a young man he went to Tacoma, WA, with a cousin to work. Returning to North Dakota, he rented a farm south of Carrington where he farmed for a few years. He then rented a farm between Melville and Edmunds. While living there, he met a friend of his sister, and, in his own words, “he was smitten.”

Chuck married Virginia Linderman of Barlow September 7, 1949, in a private ceremony at the Federated Church Parsonage. They continued farming their entire life together in the Cathay area until retiring and moving their house into Carrington in 1995. Chuck was an active citizen dedicating his life to community service while farming and raising livestock.

Chuck and Virginia were members of square dance clubs and spent many years traveling to dances in North Dakota, other states and Canada. He was active in the United Methodist Church in Cathay, serving on various boards, as youth leader and singing in the choir. Chuck served on the Cathay school board, township board, Democratic party, Farmers Union, Knights of Pythias Lodge of Cathay, Foster County Wool Growers, Federated Church and Senior Citizens in Carrington.

He was loved, cherished and respected by his family who watched his example of what it means to be a good man, husband and father, and how to live your life with honesty, respect, faith and dignity.

Chuck is survived by two sons: Bruce (Nancy) of St. Cloud, MN, and Wayne (Rhonda) of Williston, ND; one daughter Gail Lashman, Carrington; ten grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson; two brothers: Lewis (Dorothy) March, Eureka, Il, Albert (Donna) March, Elizabethtown, KY; one sister-in-law Alberta March, Carrington; many nieces and nephews.

He was prededed in death by his wife, Virginia; parents; two sisters: Helen (Roy) Holth, Carrington, and Doris (Kerry) Keyser, Billings, MT, one brother, Cliff March, Carrington; brother-in-law Robert Linderman; son-in-law William Lashman, Towner, ND; great grandson Isaac Wayne March and great granddaughter Autumn Violet Johnson.

Name: Charles Linderman

Date: Oct. 4, 2017

Message: Chuck married a cousin of mine, Virginia Linderman.   I got to know them and their family over the years at Linderman-Garland family reunions.  They and their family have become some of my favorite people.  Also, my father sold them the farm where they lived and raised their family.  I have been renting that farm for the past 33 years.  Chuck continued his cattle and sheep herds for several more years, an activity which he seemed to really enjoy.  Starting out we had a crop share agreement.  I was a young beginning farmer and didn't have the newest and biggest machinery.  Chuck was always trusting and non-judgmental, even trusting me to make the sale decisions for our crops.  For a young beginning farmer, that was very much appreciated.  Chuck March will always be remembered as an important and positive part of my life.
