Mary Ann Lies
Mary Ann Lies, 86, of New Rockford, ND, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Goldsboro, NC.
Mary Ann Lies was born on October 12, 1935 to Dorothy (Fischer) and Peter Van Lith in New Rockford, ND. She graduated from St. John’s High School. Mary Ann married Hubert “Bud” Lies Jr. on February 3, 1955 at St. James Catholic Church, New Rockford, ND. She was a homemaker and worked as a bank teller, along with many other jobs. She was a member of the Red Hats and of the Women’s Auxiliary. Mary Ann liked gardening, puzzle books and Bingo.
Mary Ann loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. You could often find fresh cookies or a delicious pie in her kitchen. She enjoyed entertaining visitors and chatting with good friends at the restaurant. Shopping for a bargain, especially in the antique store, was among her favorite activities. She collected Autumn Leaf china and had a special affection for salt and pepper shakers. Friends and family would often bring her a unique salt and pepper shaker set and she would place them in her growing collection.
Christmas was her favorite time because many from the family would return home to celebrate. She always had a smile on her face when the house was full of kids. Most of her joy came from her family and she loved making them happy whenever she could.
Mary Ann was loved dearly by everyone in her family and was one of the brightest lights in all of our lives.
Mary Ann is survived by her sons David (Cindy) Lies of Shelbyville, KY, Danny (Nancy) Lies of Jamestown, ND, Mike Lies of New Rockford, ND, Jeff Lies of Goldsboro, NC and Paul (Darcy) Lies of New Rockford, ND; daughter Melissa (Roger) Fischer of Eden Prairie, MN; sister Delores (John) Swanson of Brooklyn Park, MN; 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents Peter and Dorothy, husband Bud Lies, 3 brothers Peter, James and Terry and 1 daughter Michelle.
Mary Ann’s Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00PM 7:00PM with a Rosary Service at 6:30PM and a Vigil Service at 7:00PM all at St. John’s Catholic Church, New Rockford.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at 10:30AM at St. John’s Catholic Church, New Rockford.
Her Burial will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, New Rockford.

Mary Ann was always so kind to us over the years. She was truly one of His angels and will be missed by all.
So sorry for your loss – Mary Ann’s smile and laughter will certainly be missed.
I will always remember her as Auntie Mary. And that smile! Auntie Mary always seemed so happy to see us, her nieces and nephews. She was kind and tolerant and funny, never seeming to take the world too seriously. She was also my godmother and never forgot a birthday when I was a kid. Always a card and a cool gift from Auntie Mary and Uncle Jim. My condolences to all the Lies cousins. She was awesome.
Mary Ann was a very special lady. A wonderful sister-in-law to John and sister to Dolores. She was Aunt Mary to our six children and she was loved by them all. We tried to visit her and her family annually along with the rest of the New Rockford Van Lith clan because the visits were so enjoyable. It never bothered her to see us pull up and empty our car with six kids onto her front yard. We will miss her so much. We are sure that there is a special place in Heaven for her.
I’m so saddened to hear of the passing of my sweet Auntie Mary. She was one of a kind, so joyful and full of love. She was such a hard working lady, and even as a young child I would watch in awe of her as she milked the cows, referencing them often by special names they’d been given. Thank you Auntie Mary for sharing your life, love and joy with us. Thank you for always welcoming all of us 6 Swanson cousins into your home to enjoy the sweet life on the farm…because what’s 6 more kids to manage when you already had 7 of your own. Our memories of you are fond, and we are grateful for the times we had to share life together. I’m sure Jesus is wrapping his loving arms around you as he welcomes you into His kingdom. Sending my condolences to all of the Lies cousins. Your momma was definitely one of the sweetest lady’s on earth.

I adored my Auntie Mary so much. She was always smiling, cheerful and happy and was a joy to be around. She was such a hard worker, raising her family, cooking, taking care of the farm, and also working other jobs too. She was a strong and kind woman. I loved visiting the house on the farm as a kid like we did for many summers. I recall one night that I think all 13 of us cousins slept on the front porch and watched a storm roll in. It was always an adventure visiting their house and always seemed busy, but relaxed. I’m sorry I’m not able to attend the services but am sending love and blessings to all my cousins and family. Rest in peace in heaven dear Auntie! I love you! You will be missed.
My deepest sympathy to Mary Ann’s family. We were neighbors for a few years and co-workers for many years at the Legion. There are so many things I could say about Mary Ann but her sense of humor was fantastic!! Many Sundays we would work Bingo at the Legion and find ways to have fun all at the same time. She showed me her “pantry” (which looked like she bought out the store!) one day and said if I ever needed anything she probably had it! Mary Ann’s smile was contagious and her quick wit was out of this world. But you always knew when she came in the cafe with Jim and Terry there was a good time for all. We will miss you my dear friend Mary Ann!
Our deepest sympathy to Mary Ann’s family. Our mother, Adrianna (Engels) Scharnhorst was a cousin of Mary Ann’s. When we would visit New Rockford we would always stop by for a visit with Mary Ann. After our mom passed, my sister and I would visit when we were in town. She was a lovely lady with a beautiful smile. Many blessings to her family.
After all her work she put in being the best mother, homemaker & wife she could be, Mary Ann deserves to truly rest in peace.

Mary Ann was a very special and kind person. I had many good memories of staying at the house when I was young and continued to enjoy seeing her when I was home. My parents loved her and just want to send out my condolences to all of you, knowing that you will be missing a very special lady.
