Florence Christine Gisvold was born on November 15, 1930, to Edward Fiebiger and Mary Fiebiger (Zimprich) in Cooperstown, ND.  She attended the Jessie area rural School and in 1943 moved with her family to live in Cooperstown, ND, and attend public school.

Florence worked at the Cooperstown Hotel as a waitress and met her husband Don there. Florence married Don Gisvold on June 26, 1947, at St. George Catholic Church in Cooperstown, ND.  From 1947 to 1958 they lived in Cooperstown and then moved to Carrington.  She worked at the Big Chief Café for Jud & Jen Tracy, the Jack & Jill Grocery Store for the Wenaas family, and the Chieftain Restaurant for the Klein family and Jud & Jen Tracy.  Her favorite job was being a waitress!

She loved spending time with all her family.  She also enjoyed attending family weddings, her and Don’s 40th and 50th wedding anniversaries, and trips to Switzerland and Hawaii.  Florence had a great personality, one of her favorite sayings was “If you don’t like my apples, don’t shake my tree!”

She is survived by her two sons, Terry (Linda) Gisvold of Wilton, ND, and Randy (Robin) Gisvold of Carrington; four daughters, Linda (Roger) Schroeder of Carrington, Debbie Lattes of Englewood, CO, Cindy (Allen) Hoff of Bowdon, ND, and Andrea (John) Peters of Junction City, OR; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

  3. I have to second what Kathleen Davis said. She was refreshingly blunt in a wishy washy world and oh, so funny. A delight to visit with.

  8. Sincere Condolences to the Gisvold family!
Florence was always someone special that would light up any room! So many great memories of her friendship along with exceptional and yes as you all know, comical service she brought to her years at the Chieftain.
One of my favorite memories, was when ever the comedian duo Williams and Ree would travel through Carrington, they would always stop at the Chieftain in hopes of dining with Florence, “their favorite waitress”. They nicked named her; their “Other Special Florence”in reference to Florence Henderson of the Brady Bunch whom they frequented as guests on her cooking show series. Your mother always made them laugh hysterically and I know gave them much material to use on their comedy act shows, however I’m sure they would also have to censor some of it for their audience.
Florence will always have a special place in our hearts with remembrance of a life well lived and many blessing to our years working together.

Loving thoughts and prayers to you all!

  10. Oh how I loved Florence. God gave her the most unique personality! She was a tough cookie, with a heart if gold. Her humor was over the top, and to this day I repeat some of her famous comments I heard while working with her at the Jack and Jill store and the Chieftan. I’ll cherish the memories. Prayers for all her family.

  11. My sincere sympathy in the loss of your Mother. She became a dear friend while my husband, Richard, was a resident at LHGS. They became acquainted as “table mates” and had such good times together. He always looked forward to her witty comedy and I enjoyed my visits with her after he was gone. Cherish your memories.

  14. While I never knew Florence prior to her stay at LHGS, it was always an interesting time to assist in her care the last two years. She definitely knew how to keep you on your toes, albeit in a good way. I grew to admire her sharp wit and sense of humor. No matter the circumstance, she always had a remark that would bring laughter to those nearby. My condolences to her friends and family. Her presence will surely be missed at LHGS.
