David “Tubby” Bymoen

David “Tubby” George Bymoen, 77, of New Rockford, ND died Monday, March 11, 2024, at his home.

Tubby was born December 27, 1946, in New Rockford, ND to George Manfred and Anna (Ekrem) Bymoen. He grew up in New Rockford and graduated from New Rockford High School in 1964. He was active in football, basketball, and track, and played legion baseball in the summers. Tubby received his bachelor’s degree from Jamestown College in 1968 in German and education and received a post-baccalaureate scholarship to study in Germany after graduation. During his tenure at Jamestown, he played football under Rollie Greeno and was part of the 1966 football team that was inducted into the Jamestown College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.

In 1982 Tubby married Sandy Nygaard. Together they had a son, Kyler George Bymoen, or Kyler-Man as he was nicknamed by his aunt, Joelyn. Tubby and Sandy later divorced and Kyler passed away in 2000.

Tubby’s career was as varied as his stories. He worked in construction, the post office in Everett, WA, at Hanson’s Bar, and owned and operated Bymoen Septic Service and a sign business in New Rockford. His true passion was teaching, and he taught physical education and German in K-12 schools in both Warren, MN and New Rockford. The last 28 years of his teaching career was spent in New Rockford, where he coached football, volleyball, and track. He especially enjoyed taking students in his German class to Germany and Switzerland. Tubby was named the 2003-2004 NDHSCA Class B 9-man Football Coach of the Year and later the 2006-2007 Class A Region III Football Coach of the Year.

In addition to teaching and coaching, Tubby understood the importance of giving back. In a 2018 interview he stated, “It is just part of being from a town like New Rockford. We are good at getting things done.” Tubby was an active board member for Dollars for Scholars since the time of its inception in 2004 and was currently serving on the board for the new gym project for New Rockford-Sheyenne school. His commitment to the New Rockford community and the New Rockford Rockets was often witnessed through his fundraising activities, including many wienerschnitzel feeds at the Eagles Club. Outside of school Tubby enjoyed golfing, hunting, and the outdoors.  His work on the family homestead north of New Rockford earned him an achievement award from the USDA, and he was often found taking on a new project at the farm.  Although Tubby retired in 2013, he regularly filled in as a substitute teacher and had been in the classroom the full week prior to his passing.

Tubby is survived by his niece, Rachael (Martin) Brash of Bismarck, ND; 2 grandnieces, Anna and Elsa; several cousins, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Kyler; and sister and brother-in-law, Joelyn and Bob Scriba.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the gym project and Dollars for Scholars, both in New Rockford.

Tubby’s Visitation will be Thursday, March 14, 2024, 1:00PM – 5:00PM at Evans Funeral Home and from 6:00PM – 7:00PM at First Lutheran Church followed by a Prayer Service at 7:00PM all in New Rockford.

A Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 15, 2024, at 10:00AM at First Lutheran Church, New Rockford.

His Burial will be at the Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford.

  8. Herr Bymoen was my German teacher at Warren High School (MN) back in the 1970’s. His humor was unmatched and his support of students the same. In later years he encouraged me to write and as a direct result, I will be publishing my third book which he specifically encouraged me to finish. He also made it his mission to give recognition to unknowns in the cemetery. He persevered until he found the names buried in unmarked graves. People were important to him. Rest in Peace, you dear, dear loving man. My warm sympathies to his family.

  11. Tubby… I’ll miss all the long talks we had about random things. I’ll miss your humor, your sarcasm and your attitude. I’ll miss repairing your bow after you dry fire it, cooking schnitzel with you, and sitting in your garage with a beer. You were one of a kind, and the world won’t be as interesting with you gone.

His late sister, Joelyn, was in my class and on the faculty at UJ. Dave had a fine career in education and will be remembered by former students, friends, and family. He was a quality man.

  16. Tubby was with the class of Jamestown College 1968. He was one of a kind – a fun guy to be around. He helped me with our 50th class reunion and he was always there for anyone that needed him. I hope that his hometown will name the gymnasium after him that he has been trying to get funded. He was so proud of that project. Rest in peace my friend.

  28. Tubby was one of my very early playmates (early 1950s). He lived a city block from us and I visited his home many times. He went to public school and I went to St James, but we reconnected during our high school years (same class). Tubby was alway a class act and very talented in sports. I have enjoyed knowing him as a youngster and more recently on the New Rockford Facebook page. I was shocked when I read he has passed. He will truly be missed.

  31. From teacher to relative to neighbor: Tubby was all of them to me and much more. He was a friend first and foremost to everyone that had the pleasures of knowing Tubby. In the later years when we were neighbors, I would watch his Siamese Cats looking out of their favorite window. New Rockford was very fortunate to have you as a citizen. With everything that you have accomplished, the list would be so long that it would and did turn into roadway to Heaven. Rest in Peace Tubby!

  40. The team at Cows and Co Creamery is so sad to hear of the passing of Tubby.

We didn’t know him long, but he made sure we knew him after visiting just once. He certainly seemed to have left a lasting impact on the community. When he walked into the creamery I would get a big smile on my face. I loved talking with him about German and Dutch foods. I don’t think I can make an iced latte or have a good “crusty broodje” with cheese without thinking of him. And of course I’ I’ll think of him every time we have schnitzel.
