Lawrence ‘Larry’ Frank Arendt, 75, of New Rockford, ND, passed away peacefully in his home in the early morning hours of November 5, 2024 after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Larry was born in New Rockford, ND on May 21, 1949 to Francis and Adeline (Dusek) Arendt. He grew up on the family farm near Bremen and attended elementary school in Bremen and grades 7-12 at St. James Academy in New Rockford. Athletics and his classmates in the class of 1967 were so very important to him. He attended NDSU where he met his love, Nancy Nord. They were married on January 30, 1971. They both graduated in May of 1971 and moved back to Bremen to begin their farming career. There they raised four kids, lots of crops and cattle. He retired from farming in 1996 and worked road construction, ran forklift at Dakota Growers Pasta Plant and hauled concrete until he retired in 2015.

Larry was an active member of both St. Joseph’s and St. John’s Catholic churches and the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Bremen Elevator Board, the St. James School Board, the Bremen Township Board and was an Eagles member. Larry was an avid hunter and fisherman and passed on his love for the outdoors to many of his family.

Larry’s love of sports continued his whole life. As an adult he played softball, legion and amateur baseball and refereed both boys and girls high school basketball. It brought him so much joy to watch his kids and grandkids play the sports they loved. Golf was a passion of his and he spent countless hours improving his game and enjoying time with his friends on the course. Larry and Nancy won many local golf tournaments together.

Larry’s faith in the Lord and positive, hardworking, generous attitude toward life were evident and an example to all through his life and cancer journey. He showed us how thankful he was for his life, his blessings and his family. He was so proud of his kids, grandkids and great grandkids, they meant everything to him.

Larry is survived by his wife, Nancy; his sister, Sr. Andrea Arendt; son, Chad (Wendy) Arendt and their kids, Shelby  and her kids, Liam, Brayden and Aryanna and Carter (girlfriend, Amy); daughter, Lisa (Eric) Longnecker and their kids, Riley (fiancée, Camee), Tucker and Cassie; daughter, Jodi (Ryan) Schmuhl and their kids, Jessica (Chris), Kyra and Isabel; daughter, Tiffany Sten (Mark Tuenge) and her kids, Dagan, Kadrien (Parker) and their daughter, Raylee and Mataya (boyfriend, Ben).

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Adeline Arendt; his in-laws, Oscar and Dorothy Nord; his sister, Jean Dyrness and his brother-in-law, Gary Nord.

Memorials in lieu of flowers can be made to the New Rockford Golf Course, the Roger Maris Cancer Center or the Jamestown Cancer Support Group.

Larry’s Visitation will be Friday, at 5:00PM-6:00PM with a Rosary at 5:30PM and a Prayer Service at 6:00PM all at St. John’s Catholic Church, New Rockford.

  14. Nancy, I am so sorry for your loss. Larry and I were friends since the first grade in Bremen. I moved away and spent most of my adult life away from here but it was great to see Larry again and visit at the various ball games. The old days when we were growing up and his kids were his favorite topics of conversation. He was so proud of his kids and the grandchildren. God’s blessing to your family.

  16. Nancy I am so sorry for yours and your families loss of Larry. I only became aware of Larry’s cancer this fall. I played Babe Ruth baseball against his Bremen team. I played on Munster’s team with Donnie and Kenny Ermin. Best years were when we were in school at NDSU. Living in the apartment and the COOP House, those are good memories for me. I will always remember his smile and good nature and occasional pranks. I lost Viki four years ago to multiple heart attacks so I know the loss your feeling. Time does not heal everything but you will be okay. Aways Michael

  20. I just learned of Larry’s passing and must say that I am devastated by the news. I had the immense pleasure of playing amateur baseball with Larry for almost 10 years, and those were some of the best times of my life. It was a dream come true to play in the same outfield with Larry, as he was a baseball idol of mine. I can’t adequately express my disappointment that I won’t be seeing him. Heaven got a great center fielder and I hope I join him someday. My most sincere condolences to all family and friends. A wonderful man that was loved and respected by every member of my family. Before I was old enough to play with Larry, while listening to a state amateur tournament game on the radio, after he executed a play my dad remarked, “THAT is a baseball player”. RIP Larry, until we meet again . . . .
