Michael VandeHoven

Michael Jay VandeHoven passed away February 7, 2025, at his home with his family by his side.

Michael was born September 6, 1950, in New Rockford, ND to Henry and Doris VandeHoven.  He attended Birtsell Country School until it closed its doors. He then went to Carrington High School and graduated in 1969. After graduation, he returned to the family farm and purchased his first quarter of land.

Michael married in 1973. During this union, five children were born.  On August 3, 1984, he married Debra Kracht, and they had three children together. They lived on their farm northwest of Carrington and raised kids, crops, and cattle.

In his spare time, Michael worked at Carrington Livestock and was a supervisor in Woodward Township for a number of years. In the later years, he started each morning going to coffee at the Prairie Inn with his group of friends. His love for family came first with farming and cattle a close second.

He is well known for his love of antique tractors and combines, especially Massey Ferguson Super 92s. He spent numerous hours working on his so that we could have “Sunday Funday” as a family during the wheat and corn harvest.

We sometimes feel that he lived in the wrong time period, because he was an avid Gunsmoke watcher and liked to pretend he was Marshall Matt Dillon.

Michael enjoyed family gatherings, dancing, pinochle, and keeping an eye on his grandchildren.

Michael is survived by his loving wife of 40 years Debra.  His children: Stephanie VandeHoven, Jenny VandeHoven, and Sara (Jeff) Hinrichs, all of Carrington.  Jonathan (Tiffany) VandeHoven, Bishop, CA, Angela (Jen) Tomme, Colorado Springs, CO, Jan VandeHoven, Chico, CA, Jason VandeHoven, Colorado Springs, CO and Jessica (Steve Lewis) VandeHoven of Chico, CA.  His 10 grandchildren:  Jayleigh, Michael, Kenleigh, Jacob of Carrington, ND, Lyla, Henry, Ruby of Bishop, CA, Maddie (Landon) of Paradise, CA, Evelyn of Colorado Springs, Co, and Owen of Chico, CA.  Two sisters: JoAnn (Rodney) Settelmeyer, New Rockford, ND, and Paula (Bill) Loose of Woodworth, ND.  Brothers and sisters-in-law: Paul Berntson, Mark (Sharon) Kracht, Dale Kracht, and Mary Jo (Eric) Paulson.  Many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents (Henry and Doris VandeHoven) and in-laws (Kenneth and Dorothy Kracht), brothers Randy and Gary, sisters Pam and Judy, and brothers-in-law Michael Fandrich and Eldon (Buzz) Allmaras.

Per the family’s request dress in your jeans and western shirts.

Mike’s Visitation will be Wednesday, from 1:00- 5:00PM followed by a Prayer Service at 5:00PM all at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, February 13, 2025 at 10:30AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington.

His Burial will be at the Carrington Cemetery.

  17. Mike was a true blue farmer and rancher and one of the hardest-working guys I have every had the honor of working with. As a young man, he inspired me in many ways. I have many memories of him and my time living with him, working alongside him. I am glad he lived his life to the fullest. His legacy is one of many children and grandchildren. He was a guy who was fierce and loving and just a good man. Compassion and Love to all he has left behind and God speed to you Mike.
