Whisper Gourd

Remembering the beautiful life of Whisper Spring Gourd, Mah’piya Waste Win’inc’ana (Good Cloud Girl) of Fort Totten, ND. She started her journey to the spirit world on February 9, 2025 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks surrounded by her family.

Whisper was born April 24, 1998 to Sharon Feather and Joseph Gourd, Sr. She was raised in the Fort Totten area. Whisper attended school in Oberon, Four Winds, Minnewauken, Sheyenne, and Warwick. She graduated from Warwick High School in 2017.

Whisper loved taking pictures, going to pow wows, sundance, cruising around, hunting, fishing, beading, dancing, spending time with her nieces and nephew and her family. Whisper loved playing basketball and earned many awards during her high school years. She belongs to the 1000 points club and graduated as an honor student. She was a part of the Warwick Leadership Team all 4 years of high school. Whisper attended Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College in New Town on a basketball scholarship. She also attended Cankdeska Cikana Community College in Fort Totten where she was on the basketball team. Whisper attended Job Corps in Minot and received her degree in Culinary Arts. She worked at the Cobblestone Hotel and Hospital in Devils Lake as a chef. Whisper’s smile would light up any room.

Whisper’s loving family is left to grieve her death. Her dad, Joseph Gourd, Sr., her mother, Sharon Feather, her loving mother, Kimberly Nelson. Siblings: MystiQue Gourd, Joseph Gourd, Jr., Alissia Hernandez.  Nieces: Aylin Gourd and Zaya Gourd. Nephews: Joseph (Joe Joe) Gourd, III. Aunts: Christina Poitra, Kara Longie, Faith Tomahawk, Hope Tomahawk, Janet Tomahawk, Shirlene Feather, Tina Martin, Lydia Cavanaugh, Clarice Brownshield, Clarinda Alex, Lisa and Lea Peoples. Uncles: Frank Gourd, Sr., Aron Abbey, Gary (Collen) Thumb, Darren (Germaine) Demarce, Richard (Lona) Street, Kevin Dauphinais, Toni Rowe, William Tomahawk, Calvin Feather, Derrick Mini, and Gerrick Mini. Grandmas: Sheila Thompson, Cathy Twohearts, Catherine Howard, Renita Delorme, and Laverne Bear. Grandpas: Raymond Cavanaugh and Roger Feather. We wish we could list all of her many cousins, extended family, and all that Whisper loved.

In loving memory of Grandpa Lenard Crowdog, Sr., Grandpa Isreal Ben Gourd, Grandma Vivian “Littleiwnd” Mini, and many other relatives, grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, and extended family.

We would like to thank the ICU team at Altru in Grand Forks, Spirit Lake Tribal Council, Devils Lake ER staff, and Spirit Lake Tribal Health.

Whisper’s Visitation will be Monday, at 5:00PM followed by a Prayer Service at 7:00PM all at Fort Totten Rec Center, Fort Totten, ND

 Friends wishing to join the procession from New Rockford to Fort Totten may gather on the St. Jerome’s road, Fort Totten, prior to 4:15PM.

A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 11:00AM at Fort Totten Rec. Center, Fort Totten.

Her Burial will be at the St. Jerome’s Catholic Cemetery, Fort Totten.

  17. My deepest sympathies to Mysti, Joseph, and the family. I attended school in Sheyenne when Whisper did and considered her and her siblings good childhood friends. We had lots of fun on the big playground. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of such a passionate and friendly soul. May you all take some comfort in her memories.
