Mark Johnston
Mark Steven Johnston, age 62, of New Rockford, ND, died Monday, August 3, 2020 in his home.
Mark Johnston was born on February 1, 1958, the son of Jerry and Margie Johnston in Lansford, ND and graduated from Lansford High School in 1976. He attended Minnesota State University of Moorhead to complete his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education.
Mark started his teaching career in Fargo, ND at Shanley High School. He got married in 1991 to Laurie and moved to Wyoming for a year where he was a Park Ranger, which was an exciting experience. From there Mark and Laurie moved to Texas where he taught for twelve years. They decided to move back to North Dakota and he has been here ever since. During these years Mark traveled to many states and had many adventures; from feeding marshmallows to alligators in the swamps of Louisiana to attending Les Miserables on Broadway in New York City. However, his greatest pride in his life was raising two of the most amazing kids in the world. He loved them with all of his heart.
He enjoyed golfing, apple pie, and pi. He never failed to put a smile on everyone’s face. The amount of lives he touched cannot be counted (although we’re sure that he would try).
He is survived by his daughter, Briana (Andrew) Floyd, Bagley, MN; son, Eric (Angela) Johnston, Fargo, ND; mother, Margie Johnston, Harlingen, TX; two brothers, Terry (Tonia) Johnston and Jeff (Deb) Johnston; three sisters, Mickey (Andy) Gonzales, Gwen Siegmund, and Marie Johnston; many nieces and nephews; as well as his students and coworkers, whom he thought of as family.
He is preceded by his father, Jerry Johnston.
Celebration of Life will be on Friday, August 7, 2020 from 10:00AM – 3:00PM with a short ceremony and sharing of memories at 11:00AM at the New Rockford Golf Course, New Rockford, ND.
Burial will be at the Castle Rock Valley Cemetery,Castle Rock, MN.

Thoughts and Prayers from Kathy and Nicole Schuster. Mark was our neighbor, friend, and teacher. He will be sadly missed by family and many friends.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. I’m so grateful to have spent some time with Mark during our family reunion in Sept 2019.
Mark was a very dear friend during his early teaching years ….at Shanley High in Fargo. He had a wry sense of humor, and delightful laugh. He was quiet and shy, but always willing to participate in any group activities. We lost track of him after he left, but remember him fondly. Very sorry to hear of his passing, much too young!

Please accept our deepest sympathies during this difficult time. We, along with our children Nick and Ashley, will never forget him as a wonderful teacher and coach. He was always there for the kids and treated them all fairly. Never to be forgotten.
So sorry to hear of Mark’s passing. I taught with him at Shanley and enjoyed our working time together, but also our social time. He was smart, funny, clever, and solid. I remember him so fondly, and know he brought a lot of good to this earth. Cheers, Mark!

Condolences to your entire family. Was so sad to read Mark had died. I spent a lot of time at the Johnston house growing up. Prayers & hugs to you all.
Grade school to high school. So many memories from the past. So sorry for the loss of Mark. Death is a heartache no one can heal. Love ❤️ is a memory no one can steal. Sending love and prayers to all of you.
Mark and I grew up at a good time. We never had to look for something to do we made our own fun. I will miss him. RIP Mark keep the lights on. I’ll see you in the future. To the entire Johnston family sorry for your loss.

My heart is heavy learning of Mark’s passing. Please accept my deepest sympathy to the entire Johnston family as you grieve. Mark was one of my best childhood friends. Though life’s journey hadn’t allowed us the opportunity to stay connected, I’ve thought of Mark often over the years and have never forgotten the fun times we shared growing up and going to school together in Lansford. I stayed overnight at Mark’s house – and he at mine – many times as kids. The last I’d known, Mark was in Texas; had I known he was back in ND, I would’ve loved to have had the chance to reconnect. May the presence of God be near you all and grant you the peace and comfort that only He can provide.
