Shanna Marie Barone

Shanna Marie Barone, age 41, passed away on February 6, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Shanna was born in Watford City, ND on January 27, 1984, to Perry and Teresa (Michaelson) Barone. Shanna was the first born for Teresa and Perry but it wasn’t long until she was the big sister to Gwen who was born in July of 1985. Shanna and Gwen were each other’s BFF’s from that point forward, as their father’s job had the family moving around the country multiple times until they came back to North Dakota, settling in Mandan in 2000.

Shanna graduated from Mandan High School in 2002. After high school, Shanna worked a few jobs but eventually decided to go to college and ended up taking Power Plant Operations at BSC in Bismarck. Shanna was blessed with a baby boy, Grant Michael, on March 18, 2004, and a daughter, Kaylee Marie, on June 3, 2005. Shanna lived for her children and worked hard as a single mom to give them the world and the best life possible while still attending college.

In 2006, Shanna and her kids started their new adventure and moved to the town they have called home for the last 18 years; Carrington, North Dakota. Shanna moved to Carrington initially to take a job at the Pasta Plant in town. After having worked at the Pasta Plant for a time Shanna had a few other jobs in the community over the years. At the time of the onset of her cancer Shanna was employed at Carrington High School as a tutor.

Shanna had a passion to help whenever she had the chance. As her children got older she spent time volunteering and supporting the local youth center, helped with concessions at local high school games, and volunteered at other events sponsored by local companies when time allowed. Shanna loved Carrington and Carrington fell in love with Shanna. She made numerous friends that have provided love and support for her and her family over the years.

Shanna loved being an aunt to her niece Kinley, Gwen’s daughter. They had a special bond that was admirable. They even had the privilege to climb mountains together as the whole Barone crew spent time in Glacier National Park for family trips, which is where Shanna found her love for the mountains.

In the Spring of 2021, a higher power had a plan and Shanna met the love of her life, Nate Johnson. Shanna was the happiest she had been at any time in her life after meeting Nate. Her family grew tremendously with Nate, adding his three children Janae, Kaylee Jo, and Tyler Johnson to the mix. Life was good for the Barone-Johnson crew, and got even better on July 12, 2022, when little Liam Carl was born.

There is something to say about the way Shanna cared for people. She had a way to always make everyone feel loved and welcomed. She was all about having fun and making memories. She was the perfect person to throw you a party or baby shower. Shanna’s attention to detail made those who she was entertaining feel truly loved. Her contagious smile and kind soul will be greatly missed.

Shanna touched the lives of many. She kept close relationships with many of her aunts, uncles and cousins. Family meant the world to her. Holidays, birthdays, and all other special days were more meaningful to her with family around.

To Shanna, her friends were just like family as well. She was blessed with a group of amazing women that were like sisters to her. Through thick and thin she could always count on them to be there for her. And BOY did they like to have fun together!

Shanna is survived by her children Grant Barone, Kaylee Barone and Liam Johnson; her fiancé Nate Johnson and Nate’s children Janae, Kaylee Jo, and Tyler Johnson; her parents Perry and Teresa Barone; a sister Gwen (Ben) Perkerewicz, a niece Kinley Lee, and a nephew Gus Perkerewicz; a half-sister Geana Schwartz; many aunts, uncles and more cousins than you can shake a stick at. All of whom she loved dearly and loved her just as much.

Shanna is preceded in death by her grandparents Chester and Eunice Michaelson, Byron and Veronica Barone; an uncle Paul Michaelson, a great-uncle Rudy Michaelson; and a cousin Benjamin Michaelson.

In lieu of flowers please make memorials to the family of Shanna.
