Emily Linnea Carlson

Linnea Carlson, age 92, of Sheyenne, ND, died Monday, July 22, 2024, at her home.

Emily Linnea Carlson was born February 26, 1932, to Wilgoth Sr and Jennie (Anderson) Carlson at the home of her grandfather, John Anderson, in Gates Township, Eddy County, ND.  She was baptized and confirmed into membership of Grace Lutheran Church in Sheyenne.  Linnea attended grades 1-8 at Lone Tree #2 School.  She attended and graduated from Benson County Agricultural and Training School at Maddock. Following graduation, she had offers for an expense-paid college education but she continued farming and ranching at the home place due to the untimely early death of their father.

Linnea was a true horseman as a young woman. She made her own saddle, starting it from a tree that a neighbor gave her and then she got a hide and cut out all the pieces to make her saddle. She always rode with a purpose, she didn’t ride for pleasure. Linnea traveled to many places throughout her life. She traveled because there was a need or a reason, she didn’t travel without a purpose.

Linnea was fantastic at the care and management of all class of livestock.  For many years of her management time she could identify over 200 cows by name, and their ancestry, with no need for eartags.  On October 29, 1957, Linnea was appointed Clerk of Twin Tree Township at the age of 26, a position she held continuously until her death.  Unique to her was the ability to be a confidant to so many people, whether close family members or casual acquaintances.

She is survived by:  her sisters, Eunice (Newton) Dick of Lorena, TX, and Judith Sorenson of Queen Creek, AZ; brothers, Wilgoth (Gail) Carlson of Sheyenne, and Mauritz Carlson of Sheyenne, ND; seven nephews; three nieces; nine great-nephews; and nine great-nieces.

Linnea was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Aileen, Blenda, and Vivian; one infant brother; two brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; two nephews; and one great-nephew.

Linnea’s Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at 10:00AM at Riverside Cemetery, Sheyenne, ND.

  2. I remember Linnea for her kindness and her gentle strength. Although I suspect that she would not think of herself as a feminist, she was from my early years as a slightly younger cousin (now 88) a model of a strong woman fully capable of doing work that men always did. Because I have lived far from North Dakota for most of my life, I have missed her wisdom through the years. Peace to her memory. Herbert Anderson, cousin
