Gustav “Gus” Lange

Gustav “Gus” Lange, age 91, of Carrington, ND, died on Friday, March 7, 2025, at CHI St. Alexius Healthcare Center of Carrington, surrounded by his loving family.

Gustav Lowell Lange was born September 29, 1933, to Reinhold and Martha (Hoffman) Lange on the family farm near Carrington.  His mother worked as a nurse at the hospital but came home to have Gus on the farm.  His Dad chastised his Mom for having a little runt, even though Gus grew up to 6’3” and was the tallest in the family.  Gus grew up on the farm helping with the animals and working in the fields. His school day started early, as he would ride his horse to the little schoolhouse to start the wood stove to warm up the school for class, then go home to do chores and have breakfast.  Gus graduated from Carrington High School in 1953.

Gus married Patricia Irmen in 1955 in Chicago, Illinois.  They made their home in Illinois, and were blessed with 4 children, Jacqueline, Terri, Scott, and Sharon.  Gus had various jobs in Illinois, but in 1980 he decided to move back to Carrington to help his aging parents on the farm. Gus worked for the Carrington Park District for about 30 years, he took a lot of pride in making the Park look so nice. He also trained as a locksmith, and finally gave that up at the age of 90.  Gus also worked part-time as a police officer and had worked many wedding dances.  His wife Pat passed away in 2001.

In 2009, Gus married Marlys Unruh.  They have made their home in Carrington and welcomed a puppy, Mitzi, to their small family.  Gus was a jack-of-all-trades.  He always had a smile and a joke when you ran into him.  He liked to “go north” (to the casino), play cards, and get the latest town news!  He worked hard and did very well until the end. He and Marlys enjoyed taking a daily drive with Mitzi. Gus and his daughter Sharon would spend time together by going to Jamestown for Chinese every Wednesday.

Gus is survived by his wife, Marlys; his dog Mitzi; two daughters, Jacqueline Higgins of Illinois and Sharon Hoff of Carrington; a daughter-in-law, Sarah Lange of Michigan; three step-daughters, Jodi Hartman of Jamestown, Jackie (Paul) Hewitt of Cherry Lake, and Jill (Nathan) Andres of Carrington; grandchildren, Kelly Strack, Ryan Higgins, Brandi Seil, Dani Dallmann, Josh Marsaa, Kristen Lange, Paige Lange, Daniel Lange, Marissa Lange, and Zachary Lange; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Jaxon, Sammi, Peyton, Callen, Bailey, Reese and Morgan; step-grandchildren, Jamie, Landon, Zach, Kaylynn, Cassidy and McCoy; many great-great grandchildren; and a special friend, John Odstrcil.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; a son, Scott Lange; a daughter, Terri Allery; a son-in-law, Patrick Higgins; a granddaughter, Deidra Lange; and a grandson Jeffrey Lange.

Gus’ Visitation will be Wednesday, March 12 from 1:00PM – 2:00PM followed by a Funeral Service at 2:00PM all at Federated Church in Carrington, ND.

His Burial will be at the Carrington Cemetery, at a later date.
