Ellen Messner
On the night of February 17, 2021, Ellen Louise Messner passed away peacefully at her lifelong home while surrounded by family.
Ellen was born on July 28, 1937 to parents Paul and Myrtle Smith. She was sister to Lester Smith (predeceased). She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Allen Milfred Messner; her children, Colleen (Richard) Hoffner, Connie (Robert) Hovdenes, Steve (Barb) Messner, Arleen (Brian) LaMonica-Dougherty, and Dallas Messner; her grandchildren, Andrea (Dan), Ryan (Jami), Jason (Jodi), Angela (Jesse), Tina (Jason), Jesse (Jana), Tyler, Jacob, Nathan, Megan, Shelby (Nick), Nicole (Tyler), Bethanie, and Chase, and her many great-grandchildren, as well as her dogs, “the kids”, Butch “Butchie” and Tootsie, her wild cats, and many friends, whom she loved like family. She has gone to be with her daughter Char (Wayne) Lesmeister in Heaven.
Ellen was a resident of Sheyenne, North Dakota for over 80 years, and was an active member of the local community. She was involved in a variety of organizations over the years, including Grace Lutheran Church, 3L Homemakers Club, VFW Women’s Auxiliary, and the Farm Bureau. She also volunteered at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd. She enjoyed supporting her children’s school activities as well—she never missed a home basketball game.
Ellen was known for her quick wit, strength of character, sense of humor, and love of socializing with all her family and friends. She loved listening to music and dancing with the love of her life, Allen. The coffee pot was always on and a plate of goodies was always available at her house for anyone who stopped by the farm.
She lived life with an adventurous spirit. She loved to travel, see new sights, and taste new foods. Her final week was spent surrounded by loved ones, in person and through phone and video-calls. Even on her last day, she had some of her favorite food, ice cream.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ellen’s memory to American Cancer Society or Grace Lutheran Church.
Visitation will be Wednesday February 24, 2021 from 9:00-6:00PM, followed by a Prayer Service at 6:00PM all at Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.
Funeral Service will be held Thursday, February 25, 2021 at 10:00AM at Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.
Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery, Sheyenne, ND.

Allen, we have so many wonderful memories of the times we were all together. Ellen was one of a kind. She was loving, kind, caring, and a hoot to be with. We are so thankful we had the opportunity to know you both. If not for you all being in Korea, our paths would have never crossed! We know your wonderful family will be there for you, and you will certainly be in our thoughts and prayers.
So sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of Ellen’s family and friends.

My deepest sympathy for your loss. I was lucky enough to meet her three summers ago, while brining my mother back for a visit. They had not seen each other for many years and they visited the afternoon sharing wonderful memories.
