Milton Miller

Milton John Miller, 86, of Chaseley, ND, passed away at his home in Hurdsfield, ND, surrounded by his loving family on February 2, 2025. Milton was born on August 28, 1938, in Carrington, ND, to Herman (Slim) and Hattie (Ferguson) Miller. Milton attended school at Brantford and later Carrington High School where he graduated in 1957. He then joined the national guard, and then enlisted in the United States Army on December 28, 1958. He went to basic training in Fort Carson, CO. He was then transferred to Fort Riley, KS, and then Fort Knox, KY. He was honorably discharged from the army on March 13, 1962.

After the army, he returned to Carrington where he began working as a mechanic at various local garages. He met the love of his life, Gloria Hirchert, while eating lunch at the Ace cafe in town. Milton and Gloria were married on June 18, 1965, at Kvernes Lutheran Church rural Carrington. They lived in Carrington for two years, before moving to Gloria’s parents farm south of Chaseley, ND, where they made their living farming and ranching. They raised five children on their farm; Richard, Rhonda, Janet, Jeannine, and Brian.

Milton enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, bowling, and coon hunting with family, friends, and neighbors. Raising and training Border Collie dogs was a favorite pastime of his. Milton and Gloria opened their home to many people over the years, and they were host parents to many foreign exchange students whom were very special to them and were considered family; Bianca van der Schaaf Talman, Holland; Gitte Halleby, Denmark; Jonathan Castro Jr, Brazil; and Perttu Aho, Finland. In his later years, Milton took great pride in teaching his grandchildren how to hunt and fish. He especially enjoyed crane hunting! Some of his favorite memories were spending time outdoors with his family and friends.

Milton is survived by his children; Richard Miller and friend Lori Legacie Fessenden, ND, Rhonda Miller, Lincoln, ND, Jeannine (Doug) Mertz, Hurdsfield, ND, and Brian Miller, Marion, IL. Thirteen grandchildren, Casey, Shantel, Brandon, Heather, Aubriana, Joshua, Chance, Jackson, Dianna, Timothy, Abigale, Bailey, and Sarah. 5. I remember Milton well. Frank grew up with the Miller boys. On occasion Frank and I would drive out to your parent’s farm. We bought a junker 340 duster from him! More than once I’d run into him at the Carrington Stop and Go or the clinic in Carrington. He was such a nice guy and Frank always enjoyed visiting with him.
I’m so sorry for your loss. My deepest sympathies.

  7. I have known Milton Miller for many many years. I have known all of the Herman Miller Family. Howard Miller was my father. I’m a niece of Lois, Wallace, Milt, Karen & Verna. Herman & Hattie Miller were my grandparents. I have a great memory about what they went through. I do know that they are in paradise with JESUS in HEAVEN. I miss them. But I will be patient with everything until I’m gone.
