Arnold “Arnie” Nyhusmoen

Arnold “Arnie” Roger Nyhusmoen, 85, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at his home in Sheyenne, ND of a heart attack, after a long battle with cancer and COPD.

Arnold Nyhusmoen was born on November 23, 1937, to Sigurd Nyhusmoen and Blenda (Simonson) Nyhusmoen in New Rockford, ND.  He was baptized on December 19, 1937, and confirmed on June 15, 1952, in the First Lutheran Church, Sheyenne. He was raised in rural Sheyenne along the Sheyenne River. He attended country school and graduated from Sheyenne High School on May 25, 1955. He helped his dad with farming while growing up on the farm. After high school, Arnie drove a truck for the Devils Lake cement plant.

Arnie married LouAnn Moen on July 2, 1960, in Sheyenne’s First Lutheran Church. He worked for other farmers in the area and moved to Atwater, Minnesota to work for another farmer for three years. He and his family moved back to Sheyenne and started working for Joe Gaffrey in the Fairway Store in New Rockford. He was thankful to Joe for the experience. During the blizzard of 1966, he decided to relocate to Renton, Washington. After one look at factory work, he decided to go work at the neighborhood grocery store. With Arnie’s work ethic, he kept moving up until he was managing a big box store in a very interesting area where his customers included many of the Seahawks, Sonics, and Bill Gates but being a farmer at heart and after 26 years in the Seattle area, he wanted to move “home”. He heard the grocery store was for sale and decided this was a good time to move back to Sheyenne. He also took over farming his dad’s farm with his stepmother and two sisters. After four years, he closed the store and went to work for Lynn Erickson, farming his land, and raising cattle and “cats”. Health problems and the death of his oldest son changed his mindset to then sell the farm to three young farmers around the area.

Arnie served as treasurer of the Sheyenne Park Board for thirty-plus years. He was a fireman for four years until his COPD became a problem but He continued to work Bingo for the Fire Department. One of his biggest joys was playing Bingo and getting to spend time with his last living aunt, Vera Risovi, and her family every weekend.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, LouAnn (Moen) Nyhusmoen; sons, Richard “Rick” (MaryLou) Nyhusmoen, Bismarck, ND, and Eric (Lynette) Nyhusmoen, Kent, WA; daughter, Pamela (Randy Sondag) Jerome, Carrington, ND; 11 grandchildren, Nicolle Ballou, Alexandria (Travis) Nyhusmoen, Shay (Adam) Donaldson, Krysta (Chris) Frederick, Daniel Nyhusmoen, Dylan (Madie) Nyhusmoen, Koltan Nyhusmoen, Sarena Auker, Shane Jerome, Zachary Nyhusmoen and Trevor Nyhusmoen; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Georgeson, New Rockford, ND and Janice (Eugene) Nielson, Rynolds, ND; 2 step sisters, Barbara Blaine, Bismarck, ND and Debbie Goetz, CA; 1 stepbrother, Roger (Gail) Loken; sister-in-law, Mai Merch Loken and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arnie is preceded in death by his parents Sigurd and Blenda Nyhusmoen; parents-in-law, Clarence and Lilly Moen; son, Jeffrey Nyhusmoen; nephew, Danny Brown; brother-in-law, Gary Georgeson; stepmother, Juanita Nyhusmoen and stepbrother, John Loken.

  12. so sorry for your loss Lou Ann. I have a special memory of Arnie when me and Don Kolstad brought furs to Seattle to sell and Arnie took us to the Seattle Space Needle. I have always remember that. And when I worked at Cendak he was always there around 7AM to have coffee and visit with anybody there before going to Lynn Erickson for work

  15. From Bruce and Charlotte’s backyard, I use to enjoy listening to Arnie play his guitar and sing on his back porch. It was always something I looked forward to when working in Grandma and Grandpa’s garden in the evenings. Arnie was a community man, helping out his neighbors in many ways, he will be missed!
