Robert Thompson

Robert Lloyd Thompson, age 78, of Sheyenne, ND, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Golden Acres Manor, in Carrington, ND, while comforted by his family.

Robert Thompson was born April 22, 1943 in Sheyenne, ND. He was the first son born to Nickolie Alton and Phyllis Thompson. He was raised on the family farm in Sheyenne along with his four siblings. He grew up helping his folks with farming their land and raising the livestock.

Robert met Anita L. Wetzel when they were teenagers and Anita was attending high school. Robert married Anita on August 22, 1964 at the age of 21. They were married at St. James Catholic Church in Minnewaukan, ND. Robert and Anita moved to the family farm in Sheyenne before moving to Grand Forks, ND, where they raised four children. Anita passed away on August 13, 2012.

Robert was a member of the Jaycees Club in Grand Forks, ND. He attended UND for his Accounting Degree, while working as a bookkeeper at Popplers Music. Over the years, he tried his hand at a few different occupations. He did bookwork and farmhand work for his neighbors in Sheyenne, worked at the grain elevator, as well as sold Life Insurance for New York Life, before finding his true calling for over the road trucking. Robert loved to be on the move, some would say he was a bit of a “gypsy”. He never could stay in one place too long, so the open road was the perfect place for him.

Robert worked for R&R Transport until he retired at the age of 65, when he moved home to care for his ailing parents. During his career, he was awarded with hitting the “million miles club”, twice.

After his retirement, Robert enjoyed playing golf with his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed watching the Twins play baseball and loved UND Football. One thing you could always count on was Robert coming home for UND football in Grand Forks and making sure the entire family got together. He was a giant Sioux fan and he extended that love to his family. Robert loved his grandkids as well as his great grandkids and enjoyed attending sporting events for them.

He is survived by his children: Todd (Lisa) Thompson, Grand Forks, ND, Keely (Mark) Sabinash, Hastings, ND, Troy Thompson, Golden Valley, MN, Dawn (Ben) Schoeberl, Las Vegas, NV; his siblings: Kay Hartung, Dubuque, IA, Doug (Brenda) Thompson, Aberdeen, SD, Nickolie (Jackie) Thompson, Sheyenne, ND, Ryan Thompson, Moorhead, MN; as well as 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Alton and Phyllis, his former wife Anita, his niece Kayla, and granddaughter Jennifer.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 20, 2021 from 11:00AM – 1:00PM at Ostby Hall, Sheyenne, ND.  Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Sheyenne, ND.
