Idalia Anwiler

Idalia Anwiler, age 87, of Carrington, ND, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2016, at the Carrington Health Center, Carrington, ND.

Idalia Inez Sorem was born April 12, 1928, in Deer Lake Township, near Buchanan, ND, the daughter of John & Eva (Bridge) Sorem. The family moved to Edmunds, ND, in 1933 and farmed. She attended country school and graduated from Carrington High School in 1949. During her high school years, Idalia was a waitress at the Chocolate Shop and also worked as a Checkout Clerk at the Supervalu Grocery Store.

Idalia was united in marriage to Richard Anwiler on September 11, 1949, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Carrington, ND. They farmed west of Edmunds until 1959 when Richard became the Edmunds Postmaster and the family moved closer to town.

Idalia was known for her home cake decorating business. It brought her joy to see the brides and their families excited with her beautifully decorated cakes. She was also a 4-H Leader, a member of the Naomi Circle, and an avid flower and vegetable gardener. Both Idalia and Richard enjoyed square dancing, camping, and traveling the country together.

Idalia is survived by her four children, Duane (Cindy) Anwiler, Pingree, ND, Keith (Sheryll) Anwiler, Carrington, ND, Lynn (Cathy) Anwiler, Bismarck, ND, and Connie (David) Meyer, Glendale, CA; four grandsons; and a sister, Leona (Leo) O’Connell, Albany, OR.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her parents; and three brothers, Ronald Sorem, Lennard Sorem, and Melvin Sorem; two half-sisters, Audrey and Marie Sorem, and a half-brother, Austin Sorem.

Message: I was so sorry to hear of Idalia's passing. I met her at the nursing home as she sat at the same table as my Mom for meals. She was so pleasant and kind. When I last talked to her she told me she wished she could be home baking cookies and now maybe she is. :)

Message: I was so hoping to get to Carrington for Aunt Idalia's funeral. Such a lovely and gracious person. It was so special to be invited to their home for family get togethers. Many fond memories of those events. I too will miss those amazing cards and letters Aunt Idalia sent me  I have saved most every one. She will be greatly missed, but I am sure her and Uncle Richard are busy entertaining the family in heaven.

Date: March 16, 2016

Message: Idalia was one of the most gracious and kind people to walk the earth. She always made you feel welcomed wherever you met her. She faithfully kept us informed about the Anwiler clan in her Christmas card notes long after I had left the community.  My wife was fortunate to experience Idalia's loving and warm presence a few times over the years, so we now share fond memories of her.  Our sympathy and love to all.

Name: Janet Bridge Parker & Donald Parker

Date: March 15, 2016

Message: I just want you to know that I will miss hearing from your mom and grandmother as she always kept in touch, writing a note every Christmas, and such lovely penmanship! We did get to see Idalia and Richard a few times out here in Oregon, and of course, she was so much a part of my dad's (Lloyd) side of the family. My sister, Ilene and I treasure all the times we had with Aunt Eva and her family. We know this is a very difficult tome for all of you. It was a shock to all of us as we knew she was doing good after being in the hospital. With my love and sympathy,

Janet & Donald & Ilene (Bridge) & David Schrader
