Carol Joyce Bass

Carol Joyce Bass, age 91, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2017, at the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon, ND, where she had moved four years ago.

She was born in New Rockford, ND, on December 17, 1925, to Anna Teresa (Clavin) and Louis James Allmaras.  She was educated in New Rockford and graduated from Central High School.  She was married to James W. Bass on February 8, 1947, at St. John’s Catholic Church in New Rockford.  Except for a brief time in Fargo after their wedding, she had spent her entire life in New Rockford, where they raised four sons, Jerry, David, Steve “Louie,” and Jeff.  Jim Bass died in 1976.

Carol Joyce was above all a loving wife and mother.  She rarely missed an athletic contest, music concert, or other activity involving her sons and often later attended similar events for her grandchildren.  Indeed, sports had an important place throughout her life, particularly high school events, Minnesota Twins baseball, and especially her UND Fighting Sioux hockey team.  She was an accomplished pianist and accompanist, an avid bridge player, and a wonderful cook and hostess.  She often assisted with the operation of their various business ventures, including the Frost Mill Cafe, Lindrud’s Variety Store, the Busy Bee, and the Elsie Shop.  She served for a time as a teacher’s aide in the local school and later, after Jim’s passing, she began working for the USDA’s Farmers Home Administration in Carrington, ND.  She enjoyed many summers at Solingers’ Resort on Lake Lida near Pelican Rapids, MN.

She leaves behind her four sons, Jerry (Gail) of Grand Forks, ND; David (Patty) of Valley City, ND; Steve (Roxann) of Pierre, SD; and Jeff (Andrea) of Wahpeton, ND; eight grandchildren: Jodi, Amanda, Jada, Tara, Roby, Ryan, Lindsay, and James; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; her sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Myron Birkeland; all of Jim’s brothers, sisters, and in-laws; and her niece, Betsy Birkeland Rodiles.

Memorials may be directed to the Women’s Auxiliary Cemetery Association, Box 303, New Rockford, ND 58356 or to the charity of choice.

Message: I was so sorry to just learn of your mom's passing. I fondly remember her and her continual words of encouragement to me when I was struggling with my horn.  She and Don Thornton are solely responsible for making me believe that I was better than I really was.  I had so much fun playing with her accompanying me, that I truly did learn to love playing that horn. Thank you so much, Carol Joyce. Your encouragement indeed helped make all the time devoted to that horn a true joy!

I always envied your boys. She had to have been such a joy to have for a mom! RIP Carol Joyce, you've waited a long time to be reunited with your husband.
