Dolores Benson
Dolores Jane Benson age 84, of Sheyenne, ND, died Tuesday June 17, 2014, at Carrington Health Center, Carrington, ND. Dolores Jane Swanson was born on February 28, 1930 to Harold Swanson and Esther (Ponto) Swanson at her paternal grandparent’s farm home, rural New Rockford, ND. She grew up in New Rockford, attending nine years of school before moving to Sheyenne where she attended three years of high school, graduating in 1948. On May 30, 1948, she was united in marriage to Ellsworth Benson at First Lutheran Church in Sheyenne. They lived at various locations until settling in Sheyenne in 1952, when Ellsworth became employed by Eddy County. They celebrated 50 years of marriage. Dolores was baptized and a confirmed member of First Lutheran Church, and joined Antelope Valley Lutheran Church, rural Oberon, ND, after her marriage. In 1994, after the closure of Antelope Valley, they joined First Lutheran Church. Dolores was treasurer of Antelope Valley Church for over 25 years. She also served as president of the Ladies Aid and the cemetery board. She served as secretary/treasurer for the 55 Club and was a volunteer for the Lutheran Brotherhood and AAL. She was a member of the Degree of Honor for more than 50 years. Dolores enjoyed crocheting, playing cards and working in her yard. She also cleaned homes, worked at the local creamery and was an expert painter, both interior and exterior. She is survived by her children, Barbara Duncan of Devils Lake, ND, Jonelle (James) Hvinden of Maddock, ND, Ellsworth Jon (Marcia) Benson of Council Bluffs, IA, and Jane (Dale) Price of Jamestown, ND; thirteen grandchildren seventeen great-grandchildren; three sisters Shirley (Richard) Thueson of Sheyenne, Darlene (Gordon) Hill, Mandan, ND, and Marla (Wayne) Nelson, Devils Lake; and one brother Michael (Terry) Swanson, Albany, NY.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellsworth on October 10, 1998, son Ellsworth Paul, in May of 1952, her parents, and a son-in-law, Michael Duncan.
