Marlys Birkeland
Marlys Birkeland, age 89, of Sheyenne, ND, died Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at Good Samaritan Society, Devils Lake, ND. Marlys Pauline Ploium was born May 5, 1926, at the Ploium family farm in Lallie Township, Benson County, the daughter of Albert Sr. and Loretta (Johnson) Ploium. Marlys attended country school in Lallie Township, and graduated from Sheyenne High School. She married Norman Birkeland on January 18, 1947, at Sheyenne Lutheran Parsonage. Pastor G.W. Mathre officiated at the ceremony. Norman and Marlys moved to the Birkeland family farm east of Sheyenne to begin their life together. They lived in the “bunkhouse” for a short period of time until a new home was built on the farmstead. As their family grew, they moved into the family farmhouse and remained there until moving to the Lake County Manor in Devils Lake in the fall of 2014. She taught Sunday School at Grace Lutheran Church, was a member of the Grace LCW, Hillsdale Homemakers and Sheyenne VFW Auxiliary. Marlys was an avid homemaker and spent many hours in her flower garden. Her flower beds could be seen from the road and were admired by many who passed by. She also was a dedicated BINGO player. Marlys is survived by Norman, her husband of 69 years, Devils Lake; her daughters, Carol (Joe) Teel, Sheyenne, Mary (Glenn) Walz, New Rockford, and Barbara (Steve) Messner, Sheyenne; her sons Allen (Janice), Warwick, Dan (Karen), Sheyenne, and Bruce (Kim), Baldwin; her 15 grandchildren are Laurie Allmaras, Dianna Allmaras, Jamie Allmaras, Matthew Birkeland, Andrea Hennen, Brent Walz, Lindsey Pfeiffer, Robert Walz, Mark Birkeland, Colin Birkeland, Ellen Heinrich, Sam Birkeland, Tyler Messner, Jacob Messner and Nathan Messner. She is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren, with 2 more expected in the spring, and 2 step-great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Her surviving siblings are Kenneth Ploium, Oberon, Beulah Bjugstad, Glen Ullin, Ardis Mestdagh Cottage Grove, OR, Audrey Utecht, Kennewick, WA, Marlene Stenberg, Vancouver, WA, and Cheryl Franklin, Makoti; one sister-in-law Janice Ferry, Lakota; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Duane, Leslie, John and Albert Jr.; and her sister Eunice Johnson.
