Darla Mae Carlson

Darla Mae Carlson, 75 of New Rockford died Thursday the 25th of August, 2016, at Sanford Health in Bismarck surrounded in love by her adoring family.

Born in 1941 near Oberon, ND, one of 7 children of Abe and Erma (Hahn) Griffin, Darla married Richard Carlson in 1959. Richard and Darla made homes in New Rockford, ND, Citrus Heights, CA, Baker, MT, Ellendale, ND, and Lamoure, ND, returning to New Rockford in 2008. Darla worked in banks, offices, county agencies and courthouses, owned and operated a restaurant in Baker, and was a broker with Investment Centers of America where she worked until her retirement.

Darla loved gardening, quilting, homemaking, playing games and socializing. She enjoyed church, traveling, and spending time with family and she always had plenty of hugs and a wonderful smile to share with all, lighting the hearts of those around her. Darla’s open heart, thoughtfulness, ambitious nature, kindness, joyousness, generosity of care, great cooking, sense of humor and infectious laugh were her gifts enjoyed and cherished by many, providing comfort, fun times and lots of laughs. An easy way to describe her is she was always doing something for someone.

She is survived by her husband, Richard, children Mark (Laura) Griffin-Boyle, Fargo, Cathy Carlson, Bismarck, John (Jeni), Minot, Don (Jennifer), Churchill, MT, Julie (Lisa) Carlson-Kulla, Minneapolis, MN, 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, three sisters Shirley Nelson, Oberon, Eileen Ellingson, Buffalo, MN,  and Kay Griffin, Devils Lake, two sisters-in-law Grace Griffin and Doris Griffin, both of Oberon, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom brought great joy to her.

Darla was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Abie, Stanley, and Gordon, and an unborn son and daughter.

Message: My condolences to the Carlson family.  I didn't know Darla myself, but I know my mother, Sandy Shepherd, would have and greatly enjoyed working with Richard at the Bank of Baker, and would have wanted to have told Richard she was sorry for the loss of your loved one.  My mother passed away earlier this year, so I am sending a message for her. May God give you strength and comfort at this time and may the memories of Darla be cherished ones for all of you.

Message: My deepest sympathy to Richard and family.  There is one thing missing from her obituary.  She had the ability to stand on her head.  On 911, I was working a short consultant job in ANcoage, AK. Darla and Richard were docking there from a cruise and scheduled to fly to ND.  We agreed to meet at the airport for an hour before they left.  911 caused the airport to shut down; however the cruise line bussed the passengers to the airport anyway.  It was a madhouse.  I couldn't find them so I started asking people, "Do You  know Richard & Darla Carlson? " No luck, so I changed my question. ""Do you know a woman in her sixties who can stand on her head?"  "Oh yeah, she's on the next bus."  She was the first person off the next bus.   Everyone knew and loved Darla.
