Dean Dreher

Frederick Dean Dreher, 83, of New Rockford, ND, died Wednesday January 23, 2013, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.

Dean Dreher, as he was known by most, was born May 23, 1929, the youngest son of Fred and Millie (Mitchell) Dreher at their rural Grace City home. He first attended a rural school in Cherry Lake Township, and later attended the Juanita School through 8th grade.  After his school years Dean worked on the family farm for his brother.  On June 1, 1952 Dean married Shirley Loffelmacher. Dean and Shirley purchased a farm near Juanita, ND where they raised six children. There they farmed and milked cows for many years. During the 1960s he also hauled cattle to market for many neighbors with his 1958 GMC truck. Dean retired from farming in the mid 1980s. Dean and Shirley moved to Grace City ND, where they lived for several years before finally moving to New Rockford in the late 1990s. Dean helped out many different farmers throughout his retirement years.

Dean loved working in his gardens, and hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Gardening was not only a hobby for Dean, but was also a small business. Dean sold produce in New Rockford from the back of his trusty Toyota. Many people looked to him for sweet corn. Dean loved to fish, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He made many memories, and taught many valuable lessons by taking youngsters fishing. Dean also loved to hunt and shot his last deer during the 2012 deer season with 2 perfectly placed shots. His hunting and fishing provided for many stories that he loved to tell to anyone who wanted to listen.

Throughout his later years Dean struggled with a lot of heart trouble, but was never discouraged and always maintained a positive outlook. No matter how he felt when asked his normal reply was, “pretty good”.

Dean is survived by his wife, Shirley, sons: Ronald Dreher, Great Falls MT; Claude Dreher, Grace City, ND; Kevin Dreher, Glenfield, ND; Fred (fiancee Dianne) Dreher, Fargo, ND; Karl (Mary) Dreher Ozark, MO; one daughter Mary (Marlin) Brandt, Mandan, ND; 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; one sister Elda (LaVern) Ehnes in Colorado; one sister-in-law Margaret Dreher, Cooperstown, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Ray, Walter, Glen, Lester; two sisters: Bernadine Lemert and Mae Merrick.
