Alfred Frappier

On Friday, February 3rd, 2017, Alfred Frappier, age 85, of McHenry, ND, peacefully passed away at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND.

Alfred John William Frappier was born to Paul Sr. and Amy (Briss) Frappier on May 8th, 1931, in Kensal, ND. As the son of a farmer, the love of the land ran deeply through Alfred’s veins. There was no question as to the occupation that would be the foundation of his life for more than eight decades. Alfred enjoyed the simplicity of early education in country schools in the Kensal region, until his family settled in the McHenry area. He attended school there graduating from McHenry High School in 1949. As Alfred so proudly proclaimed, “I graduated fourth in my class!” It was years later that he admitted there were only four students IN his class.

Following a relentless pursuit that involved numerous trips to Oklahoma, Alfred successfully wooed the love of his life, Joann Taxdahl, and they married on November 7th, 1954, in McHenry.  Their union brought the joys and trials realized from raising their family of five energetic boys and one perfect (cherished) princess. Alfred and Joann went on to enjoy 57 wonderful and memorable years together before her passing on August 16th, 2012.

Alfred was a lifelong sports fan, a trait that was shared with all of his children. Alfred was a constant presence at the sporting events in which his children and grandchildren participated. He also loved watching his favorites: the Duke Blue Devils, Minnesota Twins, Vikings, and Timberwolves. In his later years, he was a devoted and competitive pinochle player but mostly enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends.

Alfred had a sharp mind and his friends and family were routinely the subjects of his exceptional wit and subtle humor. Alfred loved to laugh, and it never took long before those around him were laughing too. Never one to enjoy any special attention paid to him, with a flick of his wrist, Alfred would summon his trademark expression, “Oh, good heavens!” This quip was useful to Alfred in virtually any circumstance.

Mourning his loss are the loved ones left behind: Alfred’s five sons John, Tom (Nicki), Skip, Kaylin (Terri), all of Fargo; Kyle (Jeanne) McHenry; one daughter Kolette (Dan) Trottier, Bismarck; grandchildren Chantel Frappier (Jim Clapp), Kayla (Rich) Danielson, Zach (Katelyn) Frappier, Kallie, Klay, and McKenna Frappier, Sophie Frappier, Sydney, Jackson, Kade, and Reece Trottier; and great grandchildren Jude and Pierce Clapp. He is also survived by one sister, Alice Feland of Bismarck, and one brother, Clarence (Marge) Frappier of McHenry.

Alfred was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joann; his parents; brothers, Paul Jr., Richard; and sister, Evelyn Westerhausen.
