Almyra "Mikie" Greb
Almyra “Mikie” Greb, age 86, of New Rockford, ND, died Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Carrington Health Center, Carrington, ND Mikie Greb was born July 25, 1929, in Doyan ND, to Nels and Myra (Locke) Olson. When Mikie was 6yrs old they moved to Crary, ND, where Mikie attended school and graduated in 1947. After graduation Mikie worked at the S & L Store in Devils Lake, ND, until she married Donald Greb on February 19, 1949, at Crary. Mikie and Don lived in several different places until 1952, when they moved to New Rockford and remained there for the rest of their lives. For many years Mikie took in sewing to help provide for the needs of the family. She made everything from wedding dresses to drapes and even made a habit for a nun who was a teacher at St. James Academy. Many cheerleading outfits had their beginnings in her home before they ever made it to a ball game. She also made several costumes for the pageants that were performed every 4th of July. Her family was quite often dressed in clothes she made for them. Mikie was a member of the First Congregational Church and served as a Sunday school teacher and was also the janitor for many years besides serving on various boards. When their sons became old enough to join Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, both Mikie and Don became very active with the Boy Scout Troop. Mikie was a Den Leader and Troop Committee member and Don was the Assistant Scout Master and then the Scout Master. Mikie was also very involved in the Camp Fire Girls organization as a leader and board member. When Mikie began having back problems she had to quit sewing, and by this time Don had cancer and she was at his side throughout his struggle with the disease. In April 1986, Don passed away. Prior to this, her daughter Fern and her husband had purchased their house and Mikie and Don lived with them. After Don passed away, Mikie started yet another career as a child care provider and would go into the family home and take care of the children and occasionally had the children at her home. She did this until she was in her early 70’s, and then for health reasons had to retire from that as well. Mikie lived with Fern and Jim for 28 years, and when her health became more fragile she became a resident of the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd on January 4th, 2013. In her life Mikie touched the lives of many people from many walks of life from all ages and from many parts of the world without ever leaving New Rockford. Mikie dearly loved babies and thoroughly enjoyed all the children she cared for. She became like another grandparent to those children who are now either adults or are reaching toward adulthood. Mikie is survived by three sons, Donald of Mc Kenna, WA, David of Euless, TX, and Jeffrey (Glenda) of Arlington, TX; one daughter Fern (James) Schuster of New Rockford; 11 grandchildren: Jonathan, Helaina, Dakota, Kristy, Kim, Keri, Dale, Kelli, Jason, Clinton and Lauren, and 9 great grandchildren: Erika, Lauren, James, Isaiah, Joseph, Brady, Greta, Jersey and Isaac; also one brother Nels E. Olson of Great Falls MT, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers: George, Charlie, Herman, Harry, and Robert Olson; and two sisters, Sarah (George) Kohl and Evelyn (Tim) Ziebarth. Her family suggests memorials to Community Ambulance Service, Fire Department, or Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, all of New Rockford.

Message: My deepest sympathy. I knew Mikie through Cub Scouts when we planned the District Day Camps several years around Devils Lake. She was a great person to work with and know. I have not seen her for years but always had fond memories of our time together.
