Elsie Dale Hanson

Elsie Dale Hanson, age 93, of Devils Lake, ND, formerly Sheyenne, ND, died Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.

Elsie Dale Cudworth was born on January 4, 1923, on the family farm in Bush Township, Eddy County, the daughter of Fred and Elsie (Pierce) Cudworth. She attended country school and high school in New Rockford, ND. She played saxophone in the New Rockford Band, which was privileged to play for the Governor in Bismarck.

She was united in marriage to Vernon C. Hanson on November 9, 1941, in St. Olaf’s Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. They lived in Oklahoma City while Vernon was in the Army. Following his discharge, they bought a farm near Sheyenne. In 1974 they “retired”, and moved to a house just a mile away from the farm. Vernon died on August 4, 1988.  Six years later Elsie Dale moved to Devils Lake.

Elsie was a member of First Lutheran Church in Sheyenne. She enjoyed spending time doing crossword puzzles, playing Bingo and different card games. She loved the family activities surrounding the 4th of July picnics and other special holiday gatherings. Her family has fond memories of her great sense of humor and her fantastic memory; she was sharp until the very end of her life.

She is survived by 4 daughters,  Karen Meier, Devils Lake, Connie (Jim) Ortner, Russellville, AR, Yvonne (Lee) Olson, Milwaukie, OR, Verna (Dan) Mangin, West Fargo, ND; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and  5 great-great-grandchildren.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Vernon; 2 sons Dennis and Stan; 6 brothers Bill, Clair, Reese, Ed, Jack, and Fred; 3 sisters Delta, Shirley, and Jessie; 1 great-grandson Brady; 1 great-granddaughter Josie; and 1 son-in-law Bob Meier.

Message: To the family of Aunt Dale:  We are so sorry to hear of your loss...I know her health had been failing but I do not think anyone is ever really prepared to lose a parent.  We know you will take comfort in the great memories of earlier days...and that you will miss her wit and sense of fun.  We are so grateful that we were able to visit with her the past summers.  May she rest in peace.  It is hard to believe that all those wonderful aunts and uncles are now gone...twenty-one all told when one counts their spouses.  I remember talking to your Dad about how special it was to have so many aunts/uncles (in addition to the ten in Dad's family, there were 15 siblings in my mother's family).  He agreed with me...but said "someday there will be a big hole when we are all gone"...and he was right.  With our love, Marlys and Merle

Message: I am sad to say that I did not get to meet Elsie in person, but I feel I knew her well through the legacy that lives on in her daughter, my Mother, Connie Hanson Ortner.  Dearest Elsie, You must have been an amazing woman to have raised such a kind, strong and faithful daugther, who has loved and guided me since my earliest memories.  I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you gave of of yourself during your lifetime Elsie - especially the legacy you passed on to me through your daughter Connie.

I am sending love and prayers through this time of loss, grief and celebration of a very special woman, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  I hope I get to meet you in heaven one day.   Willow Brocke
