Harlan C. Hendrickson

Harlan C. Hendrickson, age 80, of Oberon, ND and Dumas, AR, died Thursday, October 24, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Harlan Carlton Hendrickson was born December 16, 1932, in Sheyenne, ND, the son of Sam and Cora (Austad) Henrickson.  He attended school in Sheyenne and graduated from Benson County Agricultural School, Maddock, ND, in 1950.  He also attended Concordia College, Moorhead, MN.

Harlan learned to fly from Ole Aslaksen and Dan Wakefield in 1957, and began an aerial spraying business.  He went to Arkansas in 1961, to expand his spraying business.   It was there he met Marlene Caldwell, and they were married March 24, 1962, in Dumas, AR.  They returned to ND where Harlan continued his spraying business and farming with his father.  In 1970, he purchased a farm near Oberon where he continued his farming operation until he retired in the fall of 1997. Harlan encouraged Marlene in the starting and operation of Hendrickson Photography which she continued until 1996.  Harlan and Marlene have maintained two homes since their marriage, and have enjoyed living and traveling between ND and Dumas, Arkansas.

He was actively involved in his children and grandchildren’s lives and enjoyed spending time with them.  He was always excited to celebrate all of their successes.  Harlan has spent the last year designing and renovating the farm house for his family to enjoy.  He had a passion for aviation which is being carried on by his granddaughter Maggie who is an air traffic controller, and by grandson Maxwell who is learning to fly.

Harlan will be greatly missed by his wife Marlene, Oberon, ND and Dumas, AR; his son Keith (Carol) of Bismarck, ND; 3 daughters, Karen Hendrickson and Kathy (Kirk) Hill, both of Dumas, AR, and Karmen (Chuck) Sande, Bentonville, AR; also by his seven grandchildren, Molly Sullivan, Maggie Hendrickson, Reed Hendrickson, Maxwell Hill, Macy Hill, Luke Sande and Helen Sande.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Eldred.

Message: Words cannot express how shocked we are and how saddened we are.  Harlan touched so many lives in such a good way.  He was  so caring and so giving; he was love personified.  I don't think that I have ever known a granddaddy that was so proud  of his grand kids.  He would call and give us updates on their trips and their accomplishments.  I loved his stories of growing up in North Dakota; no one was prouder of that state than Harlan.  Marlene, we love you, your kids and your grand kids.  You all were truly blessed to  have this Christian man in your lives.  I never make bread that I don't think about him, because he bought my bread machine.  I loved sitting across from him at the church socials.  He was so smart; he taught me so much, from wind farming to the benefits on cinnamon and honey. We sat behind him at church.  He had his Bible open and was so attentive during the sermon.  He was just a SPECIAL man.

We love all of you, and our prayer for your family is found in Numbers 6:24-26.
