James M. Bekken

James M. Bekken passed away on Monday, May 3, 2010 at Rochester, MN, at the age of 61, following a courageous battle with Interstitial Lung Disease.

Jim was born July 15, 1948, in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Ralph and Elizabeth (Nolan) Bekken. At age two his family moved to Stanley, ND, where Jim graduated from High School. He attended the University of North Dakota and received a Ph.B in Social Studies and Mathematics in 1970, and a J.D. with Distinction from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1977. He married Sandy Erban on July 16, 1970, at Mohall, ND, and they moved to Proctor, MN, where Jim taught Math for one year. They moved to Grand Forks, ND, where he taught Math at South Junior High School from 1971-1974. In 1977, they moved to New Rockford, ND, where Jim went into private law practice until 1982. He was first elected County Court Judge for Benson, Eddy, Foster, and Wells Counties in 1982. In 1994, 1998 and 2004, Jim was elected Judge of the Southeast District, and was up for re-election this fall. Over the years, Jim had also been assigned to sit with the ND Supreme Court when there was a recusal by one of the justices. He was a member of the North Dakota Judicial Conference and North Dakota Association of District Judges.

Jim tried every day to make a difference in someone’s life. One of the principle ways he achieved this was through his service in Kiwanis International. He was a member for over 24 years and served as the Governor of the Minnesota-Dakotas District in 1991-92, as Lt. Governor, as President of the MN-Dakotas Education Foundation Board, was Parliamentarian for the District, and Chair for the Political Action Committee and International Resolutions Committee. He also served in varying capacities on countless other Kiwanis committees. He was recognized as a distinguished member in 2004-2005.

Jim was active in many New Rockford community organizations, some of which included the 4th Corporation board, Steam Threshers, Gospel Choir, Holiday Fantasy and the Eagles Club. He was very active in First Lutheran Church, having served as a Sunday School teacher, council member, and as President of the congregation. He sang in the church choir for many years under the direction of his wife Sandy.

Jim was a big sports fan, especially of the Minnesota Vikings, Twins, the UND FIGHTING SIOUX and the New Rockford Rockets. He would have loved to see those Vikings in the 2010 Super Bowl. He enjoyed music, traveling, golfing, cooking, but above all, he loved to read. He was known to be reading many books at one time and had an extensive library. Jim expressed a love for knowledge through reading and talking with others. He was a wonderful mentor to many people and loved to share inspirational quotes that always made a person feel good about themselves. He lived and passed on to others many thoughts such as “Life is a journey, enjoy every moment. His favorite all time quote was from Thurgood Marshall, “I did what I could with what I had.

Above all else, family was Jim’s number one love in life. His newest and greatest joy was his grandson Paxton “Paxie Lyson. Jim said he was going to buy him a car! He was so anticipating the births of his two grandsons, London Bekken, and James Jaron “JJ Lyson.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sandy of New Rockford; his children, Scott of Bismarck, ND, Aaron and his fiance Kit Taylor of Seattle, WA, Stephanie (Brady) Lyson of Dickinson, ND; one grandson, Paxton Lyson; two sisters Sue (Earl) Abrahamson and Carol Pritchard, both of Dickinson; three nieces and six nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jim’s family has requested memorials be designated to the Kiwanis Education Foundation.

Message: Sandy and family,
Kathy and I were deeply saddened to learn of Jim's death. Please accept our condolences and deepest sympathy. I first met Jim in 1966, when he was a Freshman and I was a Senior at UND. We shared the bond of brotherhood and friendship as members of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. It was my great pleasure to be of assistance to Jim in the tough 1998 re-election campaign; to make our home his "home away from home" when on the campaign trail; and, to help re-elect one of North Dakota's finest judges to the bench. Jim was a good friend, a fine lawyer, an excellent judge and an outstanding human being. As a judge, his clear, concise and common sense judgments have brought peace to many disputes. His calm, compassionate presence in the courtroom will be missed by all who practice law in the Southeast Judicial District. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sandy and the rest of Jim's family as they mourn his passing.

Message: My Dear Sandy and Family, We are so saddened by the passing of Jim. Several memories come to mind - first his beautiful smile and happy demeanor, second his love of people - Jim was always so positive. He enjoyed being surrounded by friends and family. And third, celebrating with he and Scott at the Pritchard wedding in Wisconsin two Mays ago. That night brought so much joy to all of us and our families laughed watching the Watson's and the Bekken's becoming "relatives" through marriage! Dear friends will always stay in our hearts! Sandy, your heart and love for Jim shines through his beautifully written obituary - what a testament to Jim! With our love Barb & Michael

Message: My only experience with Judge Bekken was when I accompanied a friend to a divorce hearing. I was very impressed with the straight forward way he dealt with the difficult situation. That day, he said some profound things to the couple and even told them that he was seriously thinking of making the parents come and go rather than making the kids get tossed back & forth. The lawyers objected, of course. Unfortunately, he did not do that. A while after that hearing, I happened to run into him in a store. I told him I appreciated how he handled that situation [which he remembered] & was very thankful for people like him on the bench. It was very obvious that he was genuine & caring as he dealt with individual concerns [I'm sure he saw "it all"]. What a huge loss to our local judicial system, but much more so, what a loss to his family and friends. I'm confident his impact & example left a wonderful legacy for all those who had the privilege to have known him intimately. My one time encounter with him, will never be forgotten. We need MORE judges of his character and caliber. He was taken way too soon! May God wrap His loving & comforting arms around his family for years to come.
