Thelma Landon

Thelma Josephine Landon, age 97, died peacefully Sunday, December 22, 2013 surrounded by family.

She was born to the late Andrew and Thea Gussiaas on October 8, 1916, in Nordmore Township on the east central plains of North Dakota. Thelma would find her lifelong partner in Ara Neil Landon. On June 19, 1949, they married at the Kvernes Church in rural Carrington, North Dakota. Together, Ara and Thelma proudly raised three daughters and one son. Thelma’s life was her family, home and farm. She was deeply involved in the Kvernes church, where she was baptized, confirmed and married. Thelma served as the church treasurer of the cemetery board for more than 20 years. She will be most remembered for her baking and cooking.

Thelma is survived by her three daughters: Sandra Jean Leopoldt, Sheryl Jane Woehl and Sharla Joan Landon-Beithon. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ara and son John.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials to go to Kvernes Lutheran Church.

Message: To Thelma's family: There is the saying that the size of the house doesn't matter, it's the size of the heart that does. Thelma's small house on the farm was always large enough for any amount of people as she certainly had the heart to include all who came to her door. I am happy to be able to claim her as one of my frends. My memorial is being sent to Kvernes Church. With sympathy, Evelyn Anderson

Message: Thelma and I had a special bond. Thelma was my Sunday/Bible School teacher at Kvernes. She would tell me stories about me as a young child and I will always cherish that. After high school I went to college but would make a special attempt to stop and see Thelma in Carrington when I came home for a weekend. Thelma would spoil me by making Lemon Meringue pie (my favorite), jellies or angle food cake. Thelma loved to hear our family sing in Church or at special occasions. Thelma was a perfect example of Christ's love. Thelma will be missed dearly but I know I will see her again in Heaven one day! May God's peace and love surround you during your time of loss.

Message: Dear Sharla and Landon Family...what a blessing Thelma was in my life. I have always considered her 'my 2nd mom'. I loved spending time with you at your farm, feeling the love of your family and the watchful, caring eye and heart of your mom. As I considered her my 2nd mom, I truly felt her embracement of me as her 4th daughter, even in adulthood. My heart feels sad, but also very enriched. My thoughts, hugs, and prayers are with all of you. Love, Muriel
