Frank Langley

Francis Edward Langley, age 94, of Sheyenne, ND, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2018, peacefully in his sleep at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford.

Frank was born on September 22, 1923, the son of James Edward Langley and OlgaHulda (Lange) Langley. He enlisted in the Army on April 9, 1946 in Fort Snelling MN.

Frank was united in marriage to Lois Marie Jacobson on June 10, 1950, in Warwick Lutheran Church, Warwick. His lifelong passion was for raising horned Hereford cattle - which he carried on from a tradition started in Olpe, Kansas by his grandfather. His favorite advice for cross breeding was to "cross agood Hereford cow with a better Hereford bull.”

Frank earned his private pilot's license in 1945. In 1966, his brother-in-law, Reese Cudworth, flew him down to Nebraska where Frank purchased a Piper Cub and flew it home. Frank loved to fly and to give airplane rides to his family, friends and neighbors.

His many interests included ranching, farming, owning John Deere tractors, collecting pocket watches, playing Pinochle and visiting a good pawn shop. Frank loved visiting with family and neighbors. He had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a good joke. He loved to travel - often bringing his Mother along on family trips. Some included visits to aunts, uncles and cousins in Kansas.

Frank enjoyed relatively good physical and mental health throughout his life. On his 94th birthday he took his Honda 4-wheeler out to check cattle - one of the many things he enjoyed doing - and ended up stuck.

He was a member of the Warwick Lutheran Church, served on the Community Credit Union Board, and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. In 2003 Frank was awarded the North Dakota Hereford Association’s Commercial Man of the Year. In 2004 Frank earned the Eddy County Soil Conservation Award.

He is survived by his wife -Lois (Jacobson) Langley; four children - Cathy (Isadore) Nagel, Richard Langley, Jean (Kenneth) Hanson, and Roger (Diane Carlson) Langley; 13 grandchildren - Kelly (Mark) Vanderhoff, Chad Nagel, Denise (Mark) Husby, Jill (Jon) Taylor, Paul (Laura Meitner) Nagel, Alan Nagel, Jessica Hanson, Cyndi Hanson, Matt (Amanda Day) Hanson, Justin Langley, Jared (Laura Powers) Langley, Josh (Trista Anderson) Langley and Jacob Langley; and ten great-grandchildren - Chase Nagel, Hayleigh and Tanner Husby, Donovan and Oliver Taylor, Piper Nagel, Cooper and Brooklyn Hanson, and Lincoln and Lennix Langley.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his five siblings and their spouses, Ruth (Reese) Cudworth, James (Ester Wood) Langley, Laura (Bill) Cudworth, Beatrice (Jack) Cudworth, and Byron (Deloris Forde) Langley.

Message: I've been trying to figure out how I could get there, but since I'm officiating a service in Fargo at about the same time, it's not to be. I've been thinking about the time Frank took me up in his plane to check out the herd at Sully's Hill, and then, when we got up there, told me that I was flying the plane. I'm not sure I've ever stopped screaming!

I've been working with the Bdecan church at Tokio, and everyone who rides with me on 20 is getting tired of my telling them that that's the road to get to the farm. Just sorry I've never taken the time to take the road.

Message: It is not surprising that Frank Langley lived a long life. During the prime of his life, I once watched him walk up a ladder leaning against a grain bin at my uncle Reese's farm without putting his hands on the sides of the ladder. That was certainly having plentiful physical agility ! Frank liked my Dad, Clair, they enjoyed many good visits. My deepest sympathies to his family.

Message: As a kid, I remember Frank as being a big tease...always pulled my long braids and kidded me about something.  I remember being at a family picnic and he was there with Lois...who was then his girl friend.  I tried my best to tease him! Really a charming fellow...lived a very productive life.

Message: Mary lee and I have wonderful memories of Frank and all the Langley's. We were welcomed to Warwick to teach school in 1971 by the Langley's and Frank's mom Olga. We were fortunate to stay in their home farm house just outside of town. What a wonderful family. Frank was always checking on us to see if we needed anything. I enjoyed helping with cattle round ups and even helping in the fields. Very good, hard working, and  fun loving people. We feel fortunate that our paths in life have crossed! Frank will be missed!
