Leo Albus

Leo E. Albus, age 80, of Fargo, ND, formerly of Carrington, ND, died Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo.

Leo Edward Albus was born on February 16, 1930, the son of John H. and Lydia (Schaffer) Albus in Foster County, ND. He was raised and attended school in Carrington. Leo joined the US Navy in 1948, and was honorably discharged in 1952. He remained in the Naval Reserve while attending North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND in 1952 to 1954, where he studied lithography. Leo re-enlisted in the Navy in 1954. He served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Leo was on 7 different ships and served shore duty in Hawaii, Norfolk, VA, and San Diego, CA.

In 1956, Leo was united in marriage to Sarah Greer in Portland, OR. She died in 1967.

On April 20, 1970, Leo retired from the Navy as a Lithographer 1st Class after serving for 20 years. He received many medals, certifications and letters of recommendation from his commander. He lived in San Diego and worked as a bartender for a time. In 1980, Leo moved to Fargo, ND, then lived in Mora, MN for a short time before moving back to Fargo.

Leo was a member of Elks Club, Moose Lodge, VFW, and American Legion. He did a lot of volunteer work thru the American Legion and VFW in CA. After moving to Fargo, ND, he remained a member of American Legion and VFW, and joined AMVETS, DAV, and Senior Citizens, where he did more volunteer work.

Leo was a fun loving person who loved being around people. He loved all sports, especially baseball the best, football and basketball. Leo kept up with all the Bison, Red Hawks, and Viking games. He was an avid collector of all sorts, a traveler, and autograph collector. Leo loved taking pictures of places he’d been and people he knew.

Leo is survived by a daughter, Sandi (Richard J.) Linehan, Elizabeth, CO; three grandchildren, Shawn, Jared, and Shannen Linehan; a sister, Janice Hardy, in Maine; a brother, Leonard Albus, Fargo, ND; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Sarah.
