Lois J. Fahrer

Lois J. Fahrer of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, formerly New Rockford, ND, went to be with our Lord on July 2, 2011, after a short illness.

Lois Jeanette McMillan was born on December 10, 1917 in Canistota, South Dakota to Robert and Louise (Tornow) McMillan. Lois obtained her B.A degree in Home Economics and English Education from North Dakota State University in 1939. She taught in New Salem, ND, where she met another teacher, Arnold “Arnie” Fahrer. They were married on July 10, 1943, in Medford, Oregon, while Arnie served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Lois moved to New Rockford while Arnie was deployed over seas and later taught English and Home Economics at New Rockford High School.

Following Arnie’s death on February 9, 1987, Lois relocated to Coeur d' Alene, Idaho.   She fulfilled the position of house mother for ten years at Walden House, an affiliation of the local hospital providing accommodations for families of hospitalized patients, before her final retirement.

Lois is survived by two sons, Robert (Maxine) of Seattle, Washington, Frank (Karen) of Sidney, Ohio; and her daughter, Lucinda “Cindy” Avriett of Post Falls, Idaho.  She was blessed with six grandchildren - Nathan, Christin, Kimberly, Shane, Nicole, and Amanda; and four great grand children - Cherokee, Hunter, Rylie, and Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her mother, father, husband Arnie, brother Robert, and sisters Elsie, Mary and Alice.

Message: Dear Cindy, Bob and Frank,
My condolences on the loss of your mother. She was a very special lady. I have fond memories of her as a great neighbor, favorite teacher and family friend. Her quick wit and laugh always added such joy to any situation. She gave so much of her life to helping others. I always enjoyed visiting with our Mom and felt I learned something new everytime I saw her. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Message: Dear Friends and Family,

Lois our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother has come back home. In a telephone conversation with me two weeks before she passed away and during her last stay in the hospital, she said she wanted to go home to Fargo. As Maxine, my wife, and daughter Christin were heading toward New Rockford for her place alongside our Dad and her husband, the velvet miles of lightly blowing green fields all around us were welcoming her home. She is now where she belongs. She was, as I said to my nephew Shane, "on loan" to us all.

The comments posted here are so deeply appreciated by us, and appear to be confirming what we family knew: she was well thought of by those around her - - in the hospital, in her Assisted Care home, in the rehab hospital and from long years past. Thank You to all.
Anecdotes abound about living life fully. Dancing, watching baseball and (of course!) Lawrence Welk brought her great joy. She once wore a toga to a corporate party in Rome, Italy and her smile that night was as broad as the distance between New Rockford and Rome. She loved being visited by all of her kin.

We miss her now and will forever. We also know that she knew her final resting place, and is now free to hold hands forever with Arnie, her husband. Godspeed to them both.

Message: To the Fahrer Family,
My condolences to all of you in the passing of your mother. She was such a nice lady. I yet recall her flying through the front door of the high school at 8:25 - as Mr. Rindt wanted teachers in place at 8:30:)) Your family was an important part of NR history. And we have nice memories of our school years. My thoughts are with you.

Message: Each time I remember your mother I think of a very refined lady. She always dressed like a professional and carried herself with pride. I never heard her speak an unkind word about anybody. She had the patience of a saint when it came to dealing with the class clowns, the unruly, or those that just had trouble comprehending. I still think of her each time I drive past your old home. I know she is still in the hearts of the many children she taught throughout her many years of teaching.
