Marllian Mehlhoff

Marllian J. Mehlhoff, age 74, of Minot, ND, died Sunday, November 21, 2010 at Trinity Health in Minot ND.

Marllian Ulness was born April 21, 1936, at New Rockford, ND, the daughter of Nels and Helga (Simonson) Ulness. She attended schools in Cooperstown, Dunseith, Fargo, and New Rockford. In her younger years, Marllian worked at Swift and Company and Wonder Lanes, both of New Rockford. She also did painting and woodworking with her sisters. She loved to be called by her loving nickname, “Muddy, which was originally bestowed upon her by her young nephews.

She was united in marriage to David Mehlhoff on July 6, 1968, at New Rockford. They moved to Elgin, ND in 1969, and in 1971, to Jamestown, ND. While living there, the Mehlhoff’s owned and operated the Coin Castle. Marllian’s health caused her to need a Kidney transplant, and she was very proud of her sister Gloria who gave her “the gift of life. She was able to keep the kidney for 33 years, which made her one of the longest kidney transplant recipients in North Dakota. She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, Jamestown.

David and Marllian moved to Minot in 1989, and she continued to pursue her hobbies of bowling, darts, ceramics, crocheting and reading. She is best remembered for always telling stories and loving to laugh. Marllian enjoyed spending time in Arizona later in life, but she loved North Dakota and the change of seasons, and was always in awe of the snow when it sparkled like diamonds.

She is survived by her husband David; one daughter Cynthia (Randy) Boatright, Wahpeton, ND; three sons, Andrew (Mary) Anderson, Jamestown, ND, Todd (Laura) Mehlhoff, Bismarck, ND, and Justin (Dawn) Mehlhoff, Mandan, ND; 13 Grandchildren; 12 Great Grandchildren; and one sister, Gloria Jensen of New Rockford.

Marllian was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Helmer, Norman, Curtis, Odean, Chester; and five sisters, Marian, Vivian, Bernice, Violet, and Dorothy; and one grandson, Jason Anderson.
