Merlyn Johnson

 

Merlyn Johnson, age 75, of Sykeston, ND, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake, ND.

Merlyn H. Johnson was born July 23, 1935, the son of Victor and Beatrice (Hewitt) Johnson in Lowery Township, near Sykeston, ND. He attended country school in Johnson Township and later high school at Sykeston Public School, graduating in 1954. Merlyn joined the Air Force in the fall of 1954, serving until the spring of 1958. He returned to Sykeston and began farming.

On October 11, 1958, Merlyn was united in marriage to Franny Huss at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Sykeston. He and Fran spent 35 years farming south of Sykeston. Merlyn then spent the last 17 years of his life driving truck for various construction companies. For the the last four years, he especially enjoyed working in the oil fields in western North Dakota for Rink Construction.

He was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church and the American Legion in Sykeston.

Merlyn will be remembered and deeply missed by his wife, Fran, Sykeston, ND; four children, Marcy (Mark) Syman, Stillwater, MN, Lisa (Paul) Klocke, Carrington, ND, Wesley (Camey) Johnson, Washburn, ND, and Alison (Shane) Schumann, Carrington, ND; 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; one sister, Yvonne (Bob) Miller, White Bear Lake, MN; and one brother, Steve (Jeanette) Johnson, White Bear Lake, MN.

He will be greeted in heaven by his parents; a brother, Lowell Johnson; and a sister, Vickie Sarro.

Message: Merlyn and I worked together at Rink Construction in Keene. We were camper neighbors in Keene for 6 months in 2008. Got to know him really well. Spent many nights visiting together until I moved the my family to Watford City. He was a good truck driver. We did many jobs together. He will be deeply missed. Was hoping to see him back at Rink Construction in the spring but God had other plans for him. Sorry we were unable to attend the funeral services to pay our respects. I remember Merlyn as a good neighbor -- hard-working, generous -- and a good friend -- kind, gentle, always with a smile on his face. I babysat for the Johnson kids when I was in high school and then they babysat for my kids! And Merlyn and Fran -- an admirable couple, working hard and playing hard together.
