Marvin Miska
Marvin Miska, age 85, of Glenfield, ND, died peacefully Sunday, October 15, 2017, at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND, in the arms of his two daughters. Marvin Arthur Miska was born on May 7, 1932, in Carrington, ND, the son of Arthur and Rose (Harding) Miska. He grew up in McHenry and attended school there, graduating on May 19, 1950, from McHenry High School as Salutatorian. In the Fall of 1950, he started teaching in a country school near Westhope, ND. He went on to continue his education at Valley City College in the summer of 1951. Marvin started teaching at Colvin Township Somerville School in December of 1951, and taught there for 5 ½ years. On August 27, 1954, Marvin married the love of his life, Evanell “Evie” Bartlett, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, McHenry. After teaching, Marvin and Evie moved to Tioga, ND, where he started to work at Perry Thompson Appliance Store. In 1957, their first daughter Paula was born. During the years of 1958 to 1986 Marvin worked in the retail business for Gambles, Woolworth, and Woolco in various states. Their second daughter Paulette was born in 1966. While he worked at both Gambles & Woolco, Marvin made the Million Dollar Club. In 1986, Marvin & Evie moved back to their hometown of McHenry, where they leased the McHenry Bar for 5 years. Marvin then started delivering mail as a contractor. He delivered mail for 17 years, retiring in 2008. The summer of 2009, he worked for Work Experience for the city of Glenfield doing various jobs. He started working at Midkota High School that Fall. Marvin’s passions were watching his grandchildren play in various sports and activities. He was an avid Minnesota Twins fan,and a dedicated Mustang fan. He loved to fish, play cards, and enjoyed his time at the lake sitting on the deck. No one was a stranger to him. He loved his growing family, as well as his extended family who thought of him as dad, grandpa, and uncle… he loved them all. Marvin was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a Grand Knight for two years. He is an Honorary member of 3rd & 4th degree, a member for 50 years. Marvin and Evie were foster parents and also hosted 2 foreign exchange students, one from Greece and one from Finland. The student from Greece later moved back to the US and lived with the family while attending Wichita State. Jim (Theresa) Papaioannou of Wichita, KS is considered family today. Marvin is survived by his two daughters, Paula (Herman) Brandt, and Paulette (Les) Hoyt, both of McHenry, ND; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Sheila (David) Neumann, Fessenden, ND, and Susan (Garry) Overby, Pingree, ND; and one sister-in-law Marva Miska, Jamestown, ND. He was preceded in death by his wife Evanell “Evie” Miska on November 2, 2015; his parents, a brother Alvin Miska, an infant sister, and one great grandchild, Baby Schumacher.
