MerlJean Montgomery
MerlJean Montgomery, age 93, of Carrington, ND, died Monday, May 22, 2017, surrounded by family at Golden Acres Manor, Carrington. MerlJean Miller was born March 26, 1924, the daughter of Fred and Eva (Dowd) Miller, at Melville, ND. She was raised there, and graduated high school. MerlJean met the love of her life, Sherman Montgomery; on September 12, 1942, they were married in Jamestown, ND. Together, they raised 6 children, and ingrained in them strong and great family values. For many years, MerlJean worked with Sherman on their farm. In 1977, they moved into Carrington and MerlJean began working with Dorothy Peterson at the Treasurer’s Office where she remained for 11 years. They moved into Poplar Court in 2007, and Sherman passed away on July 14, 2009. MerlJean entered Golden Acres Manor in 2012. MerlJean was involved in many organizations throughout her life. She was President of Rebekah Assembly of ND, Secretary of Senior Citizens of Carrington, the Federated Church Board and Advisor to Theta Rho Girls Club. She also participated in Band Mothers, PTA, the Hospital Auxiliary and Square Dance Group of Carrington. She enjoyed many hobbies, as well as humming birds and flower gardening. She is survived by her children, LaDonna (Richard) Hatch, Sykeston, ND; Vicki (Martin Orgaard) Sommer, San Tan Valley, AZ; Janell (Edward) Anderson, Carrington; Mitchell (Judy) Montgomery, Lincoln, NE; and Kelly (Ginny) Montgomery, Ellsworth, IA; her sister, Mavis Lutz, Williston, ND; daughter-in-law, Debi Montgomery, Anchor Point, AK; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; 1 step great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Sherman; son, Jerry; grandson, Carl; great-granddaughter, Monica; son-in-law, Dale Sommer; and brother-in-law, Franklin Lutz.
