Maria Neumiller
Maria Neumiller, age 90, formerly of Carrington, died Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at Pipestone County Medical Center Hospice Home, Pipestone, MN. Maria Ziegeldorf was born October 9, 1926, at home in rural Lowry Township (an area known as “New Home”, near Woodworth), Stutsman County, ND. She was the youngest of 5 children born to Albert and Auguste (Leapoldt) Ziegeldorf. Maria was baptized Jan 9, 1927, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Home. She was confirmed Mar 17, 1940, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sykeston, ND. She was a member of St. Paul in Sykeston for most of her life, transferring after retirement to Grace Lutheran in Carrington, and in 2014 to St. Paul Lutheran in Pipestone, MN. She belonged to the LWML and to various church service committees over the years.
She graduated from 8th grade at Sykeston Public School in 1941. She attended high school there for a few weeks before dropping out to work at Merck’s Grocery in Sykeston, where she was employed until her marriage. Maria completed her interrupted education by obtaining her GED in Carrington, ND, in 1986. She married Arthur Neumiller April 10, 1947, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sykeston. Maria was an active partner in farming, driving the grain truck to the elevator at harvest, driving tractor while Art stacked bales on the stone boat, hauling bales and picking rocks. After the couple retired to Carrington in 1992, Maria worked part-time at the SuperValu grocery store. She also volunteered at Golden Acres Manor. After Art’s death in 2002, Maria kept busy assisting her older sisters and in-laws, and sharing her made-from-scratch baked goods and home-cooked meals with them. In 2013, Maria sold the house she had built for herself in Carrington and moved to an apartment in Pipestone, MN. At age 87, she took and passed her first-ever driver’s test. (When she started driving in ND, a license was obtained by merely submitting a request to the state.) Maria is survived by one son Dennis Neumiller (Autrye Gray) of Torrance, CA; one daughter, Jean Neumiller (William Corcoran) of Jasper, MN; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; 2 brothers, Albert and Herbert; 2 sisters, Ella and Malinda; 18 brothers- and sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
