Axel Nielsen

Axel Nielsen, age 92, of Sheyenne, ND, died Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Altru Health System, Grand Forks, ND.


Axel S. Nielsen was born on June 13, 1921 on a farm in Rock Township near Sheyenne to Julius and Jensy (Beck) Nielsen. He graduated in May of 1941. He enlisted in the Army in January 1942, and was discharged on November 11, 1945. While in the Army, Axel served stateside for 22 months and overseas 22 months. While serving overseas, Axel served in the South Pacific theatre.


Axel married Lois Strand on March 3, 1944. Lois died December 1, 1994. They raised three children Virginia, Diane and Rebecca.


Upon Axel’s discharge, he worked for Concrete Sectional Culvert company as a mechanic for 37 ½ years. He retired in December of 1983.


Axel belonged to many organizations during his lifetime. He served on the First Lutheran Church Board for 8 years, the Sheyenne City Council for 12 years, 7 as mayor, the Sheyenne Fire Department for 62 years, the Sheyenne Park Board for 24 years, the Teamsters, the Cooties, the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the American Legion, the Eagles for 33 years, Post Commander for the Eddy County VFW Post #3696 for 26 years, 6th District Commander for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Color Guard for the American Legion. He also was a bingo chairman and served as Deputy Law Enforcement for Sheyenne occasionally.


Axel became a resident of Heartland Care Center of Devils Lake in October of 2010.


Axel is survived by three daughters, Virginia (David) Erickson, Warren, OR; Diane (David) Karlsbraaten, Sheyenne, ND; and Rebecca (Kenneth) Ames, Sheyenne, ND; six grandchildren, Kim (Todd) Giesbrecht, Beaverton, OR; Jeff (Susie) Erickson, Scappoose, OR; Miranda (Kurt) Schlichting, Dilworth, MN; Tracy (Jason) Bedsaul, West Fargo, ND; Kylene (Toby) Johnson, Fergus Falls, MN; and Sara (Keith) Hanson, West Fargo, ND; ten great grandchildren, Kamryn and Raleigh Erickson; Jacob, Ryan, Danika, Eli and Tavan Schlichting; Landon Axel and Alice Hanson; and Cade Johnson; and one brother-in-law, Virgil Strand.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; his parents, Julius and Jensy Nielsen; two brothers, Howard and an infant; and one sister, Sophie.
