Millie Portz
Millie Portz, age 89, of Sheyenne, ND, died Friday, February 10, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society in Larimore, ND. Millie Ystaas was born in Warwick, ND, June 2, 1927, the daughter of Ole & Syneva (Nestaas) Ystaas. She was raised there and graduated from high school in Sheyenne. Millie married the love of her life, Art Portz, on June 4, 1947, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake, ND. Millie and Art welcomed their daughter, Cheryl, into their lives on January 9, 1948. Millie and Art raised their family in Sheyenne. They would travel to Cass Lake, MN, to camp with extended family during the summer. Millie enjoyed their many outings and adventures. Millie worked at Garnaas Grocery Store in her younger days and later went to work at Sioux Manufacturing in Fort Totten, ND, as a quality control tester until her retirement. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sheyenne, and later became a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Sheyenne. Millie loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took pride in teaching them the value of a good work ethic. When they would come to stay with her she always had little chores for them to do. She would reward their efforts with some money once they completed the tasks that they were given. Millie enjoyed gardening, being out in the fresh air and crocheting. She was also an avid card player. She is survived by her son-in-law, Ron Throlson, Sheyenne, ND; her grandson, Scott (Robyn) Throlson, and their children, Emily and Allison, all of Bismarck, ND; her granddaughter, Amy (Neil) Powers, and their children, Meagan, Jaden and Hunter, all of Osage, MN; two sisters, Bernice Hallsten and Donna (Walt) Nienaber; as well as many nieces and nephews.
