Ray Sabinash

Raymond August Sabinash, age 90, of Kensal, ND, died Sunday, April 2, 2017, at his home.

Raymond Sabinash was born April 20, 1926, in Bordulac, ND, the son of August and Martha (Romelfanger) Sabinash. He attended a country school in rural Bordulac until the 7th grade when he started working on the farm. Ray continued to work on the farm until the time of WWII.

Ray was united in marriage on June 1, 1949, to Joyce Walker at St. John’s Catholic Church, in Kensal. They made their home in Woodworth for many years before returning to Kensal.  During their early marriage years, they took care of Ray’s siblings, and also raised their six children and took care of Joyce’s grandmother and mother.  Ray was a steward of the land that provided a living for his family, and was a caretaker of the cattle that they raised.

He cherished going to Jamestown for dances with their friends, having the opportunity to visit with people from the area. You could often find Ray listening to polka and country music while relaxing in his recliner at home. Ray loved his family and spending time rocking the children while humming to them. He was very social and always had a story to tell. He spent his extra time going to auction sales, and cattle auctions. Ray will be remembered for his big candy dish that always had something in it for all who came over to visit the family.

Ray will be remembered by his 6 children, Jennifer Kylmanen, Jamestown, ND, Monty Sabinash, Kensal, Renee Spitzer, Jamestown, Tammy Ramer, Kensal, Mark Sabinash,  Jamestown, and Mike (Tanya) Sabinash, Kensal; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren; 3 sisters Margaret Nash, Jeanne Chupich,  and  Lori Chiodo, all of Harvard IL.

He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce, his parents; a great-granddaughter, 3 brothers Ralph, Richard, and Dennis; and 5 sisters Frances, Catherine, Dorothy, Ann and Mary.

Message: Sorry to hear about Ray, we always looked forward to being able to see and visit with him and Joyce whenever we were up in Kensal for harvest. We were unable to make it for harvest in 2010, but were up there visiting that fall and Ray was still "lending a helping hand" trying to help us, as James wasn't capable of doing much due to his health problems.

Ray was like his name - a Ray of Sunshine, with a heart as big as the whole outdoors.
