Lillian Shaw
Lillian Shaw, age 100, of Fort Totten, ND, died Sunday, October 12, 2014, in her home at Fort Totten. Lillian Jane Rainbow was born on December 5, 1913, the daughter of Bernard and Carrie (White) Rainbow in Fort Totten. She was united in marriage on March 7, 1933, in Devils Lake, ND, to William Shaw, Jr. From their union six children were born. William Shaw, Jr. (Four Bears) died on August 31, 1952. Lillian Shaw was a private person with a generous heart. Her home was always open to her grandchildren. She was well known for her beadwork, and sewing quilts and shawls. After the death of her husband she sold arts and crafts to maintain her home and to provide for her family. She was an active member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church and was periodically recognized and honored for her many years of participation and support.
She was the oldest female tribal member at the time of her passing and had the distinguished honor of having her birthday proclaimed “Lillian Shaw Day” by the Spirit Lake Tribal Council. She has family members, female and male, that are members of the armed forces. Her eldest son, Andrew Shaw, is a Korean Conflict POW/veteran. He has been notified that he will soon be awarded the Purple Heart medal for service to his country. Lillian is survived by her daughter Ardis Shaw, two sons Andrew and Vincent Shaw; adopted son Tony McDonald, her sister Hermenia McKay; family friend Myra Pearson; niece Cheryl Good Iron; grandchildren Cindy Black Lance, Dora Shaw, Rhea Smith, Corrie Shaw, Michael Thompson III, Marcella Shaw, Barney Shaw, Mark Shaw, J. W. Shaw, Lola Mudgett, Barrett Mudget, Nilus Black Lance, Sr., Marshall Black Lance, Sr., Ryan Marie Thompson, Ezra Thompson, Jordan Leigh Thompson, Taylor Dawn Thompson, Devyn Rae Thompson, Peyton Rose Thompson, Allison Shaw, Alanna Shaw, Alesia Shaw, Alex Shaw, Marshall Black Lance, II, Carrie Black Lance, Kara Shaw, Keisha Shaw, Arlis Littlewind, Allene Shaw, Whalen "Bud" Shaw, Miles Thompson; also many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband William, her three children Vivian, Roger and Hazel, four siblings Joe Rainbow, Sr., Dora Gray, Andrew Rainbow, and Julius Rainbow, Sr. Please forgive the omission of other names at this time as it is a difficult time for us.

Message: My sincere condolences on the loss of your dear mother & grandmother. Lillian was a very special lady and will be greatly missed. It is always heart wrenching when death causes us to loose someone we love. Please be assured that God does love you and your family and has even made a promise in the bible book of Revelation 21:3, 4. He has promised to bring an end to all sickness, pain, and even death. I hope that you can find comfort in the scriptures to help you and your family to ease your distress and sorrow.
