Robert Sylling

Robert Norris Sylling, 55, was born August 16, 1961 to Norris and Joy (Olson) Sylling in New Rockford, ND.  He passed away unexpectedly on December 7th (the anniversary of his dad’s death) at CHI St. Alexis Health Hospital in Devils Lake.

He attended Oberon School and later moved to Sheyenne and graduated from SHS in 1979. He then went on to further his knowledge at Lake Region Junior College.

On July 10th, 1981, he married his school sweetheart, Nancy Bachmeier. They resided in rural Sheyenne and eventually moved to Devils Lake where they made their home and raised their four children.

Bob's passion was to build things and he definitely had a knack for it. He could build anything, big or small. He began working in the construction field for Wayne Fee. He was later employed by Great Plains, and UBC (the current Pro-Build). In 2008, he decided that he would like to try a new profession and share his skills and knowledge. He accepted a teaching position as a Carpentry instructor at Cankdeska Cikana Community College, Fort Totten, ND.

Bob was a true outdoorsman. Fishing, hunting, and camping were his favorite past times, especially with family and friends. He really enjoyed processing the meat he, his boys, and his friends had harvested during the deer seasons.  Having the grandkids out with him to help with stuffing the grinder and turning the sausage stuffer was great fun.  This past summer his new thing was the lake lot where his buddy Junior allowed him to make a landing for his newly purchased RV’s.  Bob now had his own peaceful paradise, and he enjoyed the company of anyone who would stop by and BS with him.  He enjoyed splitting wood or doing his favorite pastime of “just watching the wood burn”.  The lake became his new hangout on the weekends with Nancy.  Bob was always the life of the party with his jokes and sense of humor. He also enjoyed planting his garden each spring and making his famous tomato juice, a skill passed down from his dad.  His family was his pride and joy, and his greatest pleasure was being a Papa. There was nothing more that he loved but to play, spend time with, and then share stories about his grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his wife Nancy, children Amanda (Michael) Beranek of Marshall MN, Michael (Megan) of Devils Lake, Mitchell (Amber) of Devils Lake and Ashley (Shawn) Stafford of Devils Lake.  Also 6 grandchildren Myles, Saige, Masyn, Maddyx, Saidee and Weston; and his sisters Judy (Bob) Possen, Fargo, Cherryl (Brad) Bach, Riverton Wyoming, Peggy (Don) Lindstrom, Kindred, ND, & Patty (Doug) Altringer, Eckelson, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law and great niece.
