Dawn LaNell (Schmid) Toney

Dawn Toney, age 67, of Sallisaw, OK died on  August 11, 2017, in Carrington, ND, at her brother's home under the care of her family and Hospice.

Dawn LaNell Schmid was born on November 1, 1949, in Carrington, ND, the daughter of Duane and Helen (McCleery) Schmid. She was raised on the family farm near Barlow. Dawn attended Birtsell Township Country School, graduated from Carrington High School in 1968 and attended the New York Hairstyling Academy in Fargo.

On September 15, 1972, Dawn was united in marriage to Leland Lloyd Toney at the Carrington United Methodist Federated Church. The couple then moved to Lloyd’s hometown of Sallisaw, OK, where they had a small acreage and raised their two children, Amber and John. Lloyd died August 22, 2004.

Dawn attended nursing school and graduated in 1996 as a licensed practical nurse. She worked at Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw for 18 years and three years at the Vian Nursing Home, where she worked until her retirement in 2016. Caring for patients and their families was the highlight of her nursing career. She was especially skilled as an emergency room nurse.

Dawn was very creative and enjoyed drawing, painting and arts and crafts. She was a dedicated 4-H leader and supported her children in their school and sport activities. An avid genealogist, Dawn researched her and her husband's family trees, creating a memorable legacy for future generations.

She is survived by her daughter, Amber (Matt) Mulnik of Robins, IA, her son, John Toney of Sallisaw, her father, Duane Schmid and brother, Michael (Danette) Schmid, her aunts, Patricia McCleery and Dora Montgomery all of Carrington, seven grandchildren (Deonna, Kyla, Leah, Hayden, Emily, Jonathan and Anna) and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Dawn was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Schmid, her husband of 32 years, Lloyd Toney, and an infant sister.

The family would like to extend our gratitude to the staff at Peachtree Hospice in Poteau, OK, and Catholic Health Initiatives Hospice in Valley City, ND, for their compassionate and loving care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Dawn’s name to the Reynold’s Cancer Support House, 3324 South M Street, Fort Smith, AR 72903.

Message: Dawn will always be "Punky" to us.  She was our junior bridesmaid along with my brother, John, as the junior groomsman.  She was 11 at the time & so beautiful & grew up even more beautiful, funny, loving.  We had many phone calls over the years & she was more of a niece to me than a cousin since I grew up with the Schmid family. We will always love you, Punky, & never forget. Our deepest sympathy to Amber, John, Mike & everyone.  Love from the Fugere's.
