Vera Nystrom

Vera Nystrom, age 92, of New Rockford, ND, formerly Sheyenne, ND, died Friday, February 19, 2010, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford.


Vera Monica Brawders was born April 14, 1917, the daughter of Peter and Edna (Briggs) Brawders, on the family farm east of Sheyenne, ND. She grew up there and attended the Rocky Mountain country school. She then worked with her mother at home and assisted ladies on neighboring farms.


Vera was united in marriage to Harold G. Nystrom on June 11, 1936, at the Methodist church parsonage in New Rockford. They lived and farmed in Sheldon Township of Eddy County, until Harold’s death September 21, 1980. Vera continued to live at her farm home until 2001, when she moved to Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake, ND. She moved to Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford in April of 2004.


Vera was a very active person who was known for having a spirit of hospitality, for being a great neighbor, and for being the “neighborhood Grandma�. She was also well known for her dancing abilities and especially enjoyed dancing the polka with her son Dale. Vera loved to quilt and sew, and so enjoyed her grandchildren. She was an active member of First Congregational Church, and had also been a member of the HEO Club and the 3-L Club.


She is survived by her son Dale (Sandie) Nystrom, New Rockford; 4 grandchildren, Harold (Kim) of Devils Lake, Edward (Faye) of New Rockford, Glen (Dusti) of Devils Lake, Julie (Shane) Dinius of New England, ND; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother Darrell (Shirley) Brawders of Roseau, MN.


Vera was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson James, her parents, 2 brothers, James and Glen; 3 sisters, Jetty Tucker, Mona Peterson, and Sylvia Linstad.


Memorial Service: First Congregational Church, New Rockford, ND

Interment: Nystrom Cemetery, rural Sheyenne, ND
(Graveside Service were held Saturday, Feb. 20th at 4PM)

Message: Sorry to read about Vera. Mom had alzheimers too, so I know that it is not really living, but you have to make the best of it. I remember Vera as a very sharp dresser all of her life. She always knew who I was and talked to me, even as a kid. That always amazed me, as most adults thought kids should be seen and not heard. I remember her as always having gray hair and I thought that she was very old all of my life. I was shocked as a kid to learn how young she really was. Karen Sanderson Erickson
