Sherman O. Westby
Sherman O. Westby, age 87, of Sheyenne, ND, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford, ND. Sherman Orville Arnold Westby was born on February 16, 1929, to Orlando and Sigrid (Jordre) Westby at Sheyenne, ND. He graduated from high school there in 1947, and following graduation became employed at Bjugstad Store as a meat cutter. Sherman was united in marriage to the love of his life, Shirley Kruger, on July 30, 1950, at Sheyenne. They lived their whole lives in Sheyenne, except for 2 years in Minot, ND. In 1958, Sherman started his own business, Westby Construction, and retired in 2010. He served as caretaker of Warsing Dam near Sheyenne for 30 years, and took great pride in keeping up the grounds. Sherman loved gardening, especially raising roses. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, camping, and his trips to Arizona. He was a terrific singer, both as a soloist and as a member of the Sheyenne Men’s Quartet for many years. Sherman was an active member of First Lutheran Church, serving on the Church Board, and was a member of the Sheyenne Fire Department. Sherman is survived by his wife, Shirley; his five children, Kathy (Larry) Swenson, Freeland, WA, Steve Westby, of both Superior, AZ, and New Rockford, Neil (Laurie) Westby, Sheyenne, Paula (Mark) Seiler, New Rockford, Ross (Kristi) Westby, Fargo, ND; nine grandchildren, Tim Swenson, Brent Swenson, Mallory Westby, Erin Westby, Scott Westby, Derrick Seiler, Jordan Seiler, Tate Westby, Keagan Westby; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Swenson, Matthew Swenson, Joseph Swenson; his brothers and sisters, Orlando (Ruth) Westby Jr., East Wenatchee, WA, Bev Pedersen, Burien, WA, Sharon (Jerry) Sykes, Chelan, WA, Gary (Mary) Westby, Puyallup, WA; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, an infant brother, Duane, and brother-in-law, Darryl Pedersen.
