Wilfred F. Schroeder
Wilfred Frank Schroeder, 84 of Carrington, N.D. died peacefully at the home where he was born. On March 28, 2012 he passed with all his family around him.
Born July 8, 1927, the son of Frank and Alice (Doeling) Schroeder, Wilfred was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Bordulac, ND. He graduated from Carrington High School in 1944 and worked both for Northwestern Bell and farmed. On November 19, 1950, he was united in marriage to BettyLou Wells at Carrington. He entered the US Army where he served in the Korean War in 1951 and 1952 with the 25th Lightning Infantry Division, 27th Wolfhound Regiment and later, with the 24th Infantry Division during the occupation of Japan. He received an Honorable Discharge from Camp Carson, Colorado. Wilfred's community service includes director for Bordulac elevator, Carrington Farmers Union, and Barlow township committee and school board. He was also a member of the North Dakota Holstein Association, North Dakota Simmental Association, Milk Producers Association of North Dakota and North Dakota Society of Range Management, appointed by Governor Art Link. In 1963, he received the Foster County Outstanding Young Farmer award and later during his career, the NDSU Outstanding Agriculturist award. Wilfred was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans. His military honors will be presented by the McCreary-Bonderud VFW Post #3524, the American Legion, and the National Guard. After retiring from farming and ranching, he devoted time to enjoying his grand- and great-grandchildren, catching and eating northern pike, gardening with Betty, and his daily long country walks. It is no secret that Wilfred loved the farm he and his wife had built and the fact they did it all together. He is survived by his loving wife of 61-plus years, BettyLou, 3 sons Jerome (Karen) Fargo, Allen (Paula) Carr, CO, Wes (Brenda) Cold Spring, MN, one daughter Becky (Jeff) Engels New Rockford, ND, their daughter-in-law Chris Schroeder, Carrington, as well as 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one sister, Lorraine Wells, Las Cruces, NM.
