Norman Young
Norman Young, age 83, of Sykeston, ND, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, November 9, 2013, on the family homestead where he was born. His wish was gratefully granted! On June 22, 1930, Norman was born on the homestead in Sykeston, ND, to August and Alma (Leapoldt) Young. He attended country school in Johnson Township. Norman was a Corporal in the US Marine Corps where he served his country in Korea from 1954-1956. He was very proud of being a Marine and was guided by their ethics and values of always being faithful. Norman was honorably discharged on March 19, 1960. On June 1, 1956, Norman married the love of his life, Donna Aarhus. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage together. Norman lived near Sykeston where he farmed until retiring in 1992. Norman and Donna, along with their best friends, Ray and Marlene Grager, ran a café in Sykeston for several years and had a chuck wagon business called Mar-Dons Country Catering for 15 years. He enjoyed visiting and meeting new people wherever he went. Norman was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sykeston and the first charter member for the Lutheran Laymen’s League. He was very involved in church and community activities. Norman served on the Firemen’s Board for 26 years in Sykeston. Norman and Donna truly enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona at Citrus Gardens, where they made many special friends and enjoyed countless activities. Norman’s greatest accomplishment was being a loving, kind, generous, humorous, and faithful human being that brought great joy to his family and friends. Norman will always be remembered and deeply missed by his two sons, Lynn (Bernette) of Mesa, AZ and Dave (Gina) of Sykeston; two daughters, Lorie (Roger) Nymark, Moorhead, MN and Joni (Randy) Love, Bismarck, ND; two sisters, Lois (Ray) Shannon and Gloria (Bob) Griffin; two brothers, Don (Geri) Young and Roger (Carol) Young; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was greeted in heaven by his wife Donna; his infant twin son Larry; his brother Arnold; and his parents August and Alma. A special thank you to the Hospice team and volunteers, Pastor Vold, Pastor Biberdorf, many family members and friends for their loving care and support as we went through this journey together with our dad. Following the service Norman will receive full military honors a at the cemetery and you are invited to share in this blessed time with the family. In lieu of flowers, the memorials will be given to We Honor Veteran’s Campaign at Mercy Hospice. Message: Lynn, David, Lorie and Joni,
We were so sorry to hear about your Dad, and want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. I know Uncle Norman fought a long and courageous battle with his illness -- and while it is a blessing that he is with your Mom again in Heaven, I know that it doesn't make it easier for any of you to see him go. I have such positive memories of Uncle Norman -- and still remember my visits to the farm when I was still very young. He was such a nice man. My Dad had such a great time seeing him (and Don) in Phoenix a year or so ago, and will carry that memory (and many others) with him forever. I wish we could have been with you at the memorial, and hope that we can all see one another at a Young family reunion again soon. Please take care of one another, and know that our thoughts are with you. Your dad was a great man.
Steve, Julie, Sam, Madeline and Eleanor Young

Your father's legacy lives on through his children, what a fine family Donna & Norm raised, I'm glad to have known them, they treated me and my family as one of their own, I will never forget that. When my son was small, he asked me if Donna & Norm were the other grandparents. I'm fortunate to have known him, he is with your mother now, for the rest of eternity. Sincerely, Peggy
