Rodney "Rod" Zieman
Rodney Allen Zieman, age 71, died Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at the VA Hospital in Fargo, ND. Rodney Allen Zieman was born February 16, 1947, in New Rockford, ND, the son of Richard “Allen” and Dorothy (Hanson) Zieman. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church, Sheyenne, ND. Rodney graduated from Sheyenne High School in 1965. He was drafted into the Army in 1966, and served as a SGT E-5 in Ben Hoa, Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1968. Rod served as a ND Highway Patrol trooper from 1969-1985. Due to an ongoing back injury, he resigned from the patrol and earned his license as an Addiction Counselor. On April 10, 1971, Rod married Holly Hegland at Antelope Valley Lutheran Church in Oberon, ND. They lived in Fargo until Rod accepted a transfer with the Highway Patrol to Carrington, ND, in 1973. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Nikole, Nerissa and Reed. He treasured his children, installing hard work, kindness and compassion for others. However, his greatest joy was being Grandpa, aka “Bumpa” to his 14 grandchildren. He loved the many tractor rides, camping trips, babysitting duties which included movies & popcorn with them. Rod was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, VFW, and the American Legion of Carrington. He was a strong and loving man that believed in hard work and offering a helping hand to those in need. He was a generous man that loved his family and believed in them always. Rod is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Holly, his two daughters, Nikole (Culley) Hoggarth, Carrington and Nerissa (Eric) Zink, Fargo and his son, Reed (Kinsey) of Casselton and his 14 grandchildren; Tessa, Lexus, Jacob, and Bryar Page, Tyler, Tate, Trevor and Trace Hoggarth; Marah, Ashtyn and Halle Zink; Graysen, Brooks and Skylar Zieman. He is also survived by his siblings Jim (Deb) Zieman, Sheyenne and DiAnn (Gary) Broderius, Billings, MT. Several brother and sister-in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved and adored. Rod was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Dorothy Zieman, a nephew, Jordan Zieman, brother-in-law, Paul Heer, in-laws, Gilmen and Vivian Hegland, and several aunts and uncles.
In lieu of flowers, Rod requested memorials be given to the VA Wishes on Wings (a service for Veterans on Hospice) Attn: Voluntary Services 2101 Elm St. Fargo, ND 58102 ***There are no words to express our appreciation for the kindness and love that Dad received at the Fargo VA Hospital and from family and friends.***

Message: Dearest Holly & family,
Our hearts go out to you all. Oh, how we wish we were there to say one last Goodbye to Rod but alas Den has been hospitalized at Sanford & just got transferred back to the VA yesterday to the ICU. He just asked me about going to see Rod & saw the look on my face as I hadn't told him as he was on breathing tube when I got the call asking about him being available as a pallbearer. Den was honored to have been asked to do this one last thing for his very good friend. Rod was a very special friend to Denny & he will be missed so much. Denny is reminiscing as I write this, how Rod would always be the culprit of many things in Denny's life on the teasing side of things & wishing so that we could be there. Rod has touched so very many lives while he was with us, now he has been called HOME where there is no more suffering or pain but being with Our Lord & singing His Praises. I'm positive that Rod & my youngest brother Dave have again come together as I can see them playing cars once again! By this I'm referring back to when Rod came with Denny to pick me up for a date at my parents farm, there was no way we could get Rod to quit playing with Dave's race track (Dave 10 yrs younger than I so 8 at time) Rod would say, "just a few mins more" each & everytime we asked to leave. I have teased both of these men about it all thru their life here on earth & they each remembered EXACTLY who I was talking about. Den & I talked and we are sure that Rod was HUGE INFLUENCE in Dave becoming a police officer also. Again, Holly, our hearts are breaking here as we remember Rod. Your family has been blessed by having one of the best men I know. Rod was so loving, caring, funny, serious, teasing, protective men (the list could go on & on). When Spring is here we will be heading to Carrington to say our last Good Byes to one fabulous man who made a huge impact on all those he knew & loved. In our thoughts & prayers are you & your wonderful family. Sending our love your way, Denny & Laurie
