Russell Thompson

Russell Thompson, age 86, of Carrington, ND, formerly of McHenry, ND, died Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at Golden Acres Manor, Carrington, ND.

Russell Thompson was born on September 8, 1922, on the farm in Eastman Township, Foster County, ND, the son of Raynard and Etta (Smith) Thompson. Russell was raised and attended school in Glenfield, ND, graduating in 1940. In the fall, he attended NDAC (now NDSU) in Fargo, ND for 2 years. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in October 1942, and was called to active duty in April 1943. Russell was a medic in the Philippines and Leyte Islands in 1944, and was Honorably Discharged in 1946. In the fall of 1946, he went back to NDAC on the GI Bill. In 1948, Russell finished a degree in Agricultural Economics. He taught an agricultural program for veteran farmers for 5 years. While doing this, he took flying lessons and bought a J.3. Piper Cub to visit farmers he taught.

In 1952, Russell married Solveig Stangeland in Moorhead, MN, and they moved to Glenfield, ND. They later moved to Juanita, ND, and then moved to a farm near McHenry where Russell farmed for many years until retiring in 1987. They spent their winters in Harlingen Sunshine RV Park in Texas. They moved to Golden Acres Manor in Carrington, ND, in 2005. Solveig died on June 4, 2006.

He enjoyed pie and coffee at the McHenry café, driving around checking crops , and he was a McHenry Loop trainman. In his younger day, he was an avid hunter, and enjoyed playing cards with friends and relatives. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in McHenry. He was a VFW Honor Guard at the Fadness-Walen Post in Glenfield.

Russell is survived by two daughters, Jacki Black, Bakersfield, CA, Penny (Dan) Lowe, Alburnett, IA; two sons, Lyndon (Julie) Thompson, Carrington, ND, Scott (Donna) Thompson, Estelline, SD; six grandchildren; and a sister, Pat (Don) Froelich, Cooke City, MT.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Solveig; son, Nathan; son-in-law, Robert Black; and sister, Betty Stangeland.
