John T. Hov

John T. Hov, age 98, of McHenry, ND, died Friday, January 1, 2010, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, ND.

John T. Hov was born September 2, 1911, on the family farm in Paradise Township of Eddy County, rural McHenry, ND.  He was the firstborn son of Ole and Randina (Grafsgaard) Hov.  He attended country school and then began working on the family farm.  In the 1930’s, John drove a school bus for the Washington Lake Country School – the “bus” was pulled by horses!  John was drafted into the US Army and served in an Artillery unit in Africa and Italy 1942 – 1945.  Following his discharge, John returned to McHenry and had farmed many years with his brothers in Cherry Lake Township, Eddy County.

John was the Commander of the Carl Bostrom American Legion Post #160, at McHenry for over 50 years.  He had also served on the Cherry Lake Township Board for over 50 years. He was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, and had served as President of the McHenry Senior Citizens Club for many years.  John enjoyed playing pinochle and bingo, and was known as a good cook.  As a young man he had enjoyed playing softball.

He is survived by three brothers: Bert of Dayton, Washington, Semon & Arnold, both of McHenry; a niece Bertha Hinchliff and a nephew Bert “Butch” Hov, Jr., both of Dayton, WA; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and several cousins.

John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Reno and Oscar, and a nephew Ed Hov.
