Joan Brocker

Joan Marie Brocker, age 81, died on Sunday, April 1, 2018, at CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington Medical Center, Carrington, N.D.

Joan was born in Louisville, KY, on August 8, 1936, the daughter of Mary Dorothy and John Porter. She was an identical twin to her greatest partner in crime, Janice Ann, and the 5th born of 14 children. Joan and her siblings grew up in Louisville, KY.

Joan will be missed and remembered for many things. She was a feisty woman but if you scratched just below the surface you could always find a pure heart of gold. Joan was a loving, devoted mother to her five children and an even more loving and devoted grandmother. She always gave everything she had for the comfort of others. She taught her children and grandchildren to be hard workers and grateful for everything. Some of the fondest memories her children shared while growing up was how magical she made their Christmas, spontaneous road adventures they would take, and the freedom they enjoyed on their beloved property on Cooper Chapel Road in Louisville, KY.

Joan had a vivacious spirit and anyone who met her would agree. Guests were always welcomed and loved with open arms. Her jovial laughter lit up any room. She enjoyed her role as a homemaker which included her sewing, playing family games, singing, and even started a local girls scout troop. She was fond of reading and writing which contributed to her immense creativity.

Her mother nurtured within her a true love for Jesus, The Blessed Mother, Angels, and Saints. A true warrior for Christ, Joan was a devout Catholic and spent many hours in prayer for anyone and everyone. Her children fondly remember learning how to make rosaries with her.  You would always hear her saying “do it for the love of Jesus”.  She taught her family numerous things, but the one thing she didn’t teach us is how to live without her.

Joan is survived by her five children: Margaret Coleman, New Rockford, Terri (Mike) Scott, Carrington, Charles Edmonson (Marilee), New Rockford, Joan Vera (Alberto), AZ, Joy Moussly (Sameer), Roswell, GA. She is survived by 15 grandchildren, Sonya Williams, Eric Williams, Angela Seidt, Demetrius Coleman, Philomena Coleman, Christina Keys (Russell), Steven Scott (Selena), Brian Scott, Kaleb Edmonson (Morgan), Joshua Edmonson, Jamie Mansuetti (Emory), Alberto Vera Jr., Michael Vera, Amir Moussly, Alia Moussly, 22 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren.

Joan is also survived by brothers Edward Porter, Houston TX, Stephen Porter, Longview, WA, Terry Porter Hollywood, FL and sisters Janice Ridge (James, Sr) New Rockford, ND , Carolyn Baressi Louisville, KY, Geneva Goehl Morriston, FL and Theresa Fikaris, Ocala, FL, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Richard Porter, Charles Porter, James Porter, John Porter, sister Mary Jecker, nephews Donnie Baressi, James Ridge Jr., and Joseph Ridge.

Message: Mother you are my everything. I know the heart felt reason why you always said I miss my mama. There is a holiness found in tears, because it comes from the heart. I gave you exactly what you asked for. Your precious Gregorian Masses. How about that. What a gift. I want to thank you for all the sacrifices you have made in your life time for all of us and many whom you did not know. All of us love you. You are such an inspiration to become holy. In intimate conversation while praying you said we must become holy. PRAY for me that I will fast the way you did... what a grace to fast 21 days without food or water and not just once but twice. Your many Rosaries you have said are full of extraordinary graces. Pray for my intentions. I would appreciate that. I am asking you for intercession on behalf of the suffering of the people of Syria, especially the children who continue to suffer. Please acquire a grace to lead them through these dangerous days of persecution. The children are going through chemical warfare. I send forth much holy water and the Bethlehem candle as a light in time of darkness. Thank you for all of your prayers, the many tears you have shed, and your generosity towards many people, especially the holy souls in purgatory. Pray also for me that I get people paid back quickly. Pray for me to get well because people need me. We all need each other. May the Grace of Almighty God keep our family close and defend one another through this spiritual battle we are up against. Tell all my people I love them, especially my children I miscarried. May they pray for their mama and help me through these dark times. I want to express deep love for Sister Mary Rose, Brother Bernard, Jeanette, and precious Sylvia, Jim Jr., Joseph, Anthony, Dion. I love you mom please pray for Jacob Soggy the child goes into surgery this morning. Pray for my Sonya she suffers so much for you.

Message: So sorry for your family's loss. Praying for the repose of Joan's soul and for the entire family that the Holy Spirit will fill them with all the graces necessary to get through this difficult time. Like the good thief crucified next to Jesus, I am sure that Jesus took Joan with Him to Paradise on Easter Sunday. Hugs and love to all.
